Zia Park’s Land of Enchantment Program Features Three QH Stakes

HOBBS, NM—NOVEMBER 21, 2016—Three Quarter Horse stakes, topped by the 440-yard, $150,000 Zia Park Championship (G1), will be featured on Zia Park’s “Land of Enchantment” racing program on Wednesday.

The Zia Park Championship has drawn an overflow field of 12, including two also-eligible entries. Zoomin Effortlessly, a three-time Grade 1 winner this season, drew post 9 and will be ridden by Santos Carrizales for owner Telesforo Perrett of Houston and trainer Edelmiro Carrizales. A 5-year-old son of Zoomin For Bux, the gelding has won four of five starts and has earned $440,164 this season.

Other contenders in the Zia Park Championship include Ted G. Abrams’ Jessies First Down. A homebred 5-year-old FDD Dynasty gelding trained by Judd Kearl, Jessies First Down is coming off of a 1 1/2-length victory as the 3-5 favorite in the 440-yard, $75,000 Refrigerator Handicap (G1) at Lone Star Park on October 1.

Jessies First Down drew post 4 and will be ridden by Rodrigo Vallejo.

New Mexico Filly & Mare Championship (RG1)

Astica, the sport’s champion 3-year-old filly last year, will make her first start in nearly 11 months in Wednesday’s 400-yard, $140,000 New Mexico Filly & Mare Championship (RG1) for state-bred distaffers.

A homebred 4-year-old daughter of Jesse James Jr and champion Alice K White, Astica is trained by Wes Giles for Mac and Janis Murray’s MJ Farms of Veguita, New Mexico. The mare has not raced since January 3, when she defeated a field of state-bred fillies and mares in wire-to-wire fashion in the 400-yard, $85,000 Lou Wooten and Sydney Valentini Handicap (RG2) at Sunland Park.

Astica drew post 4 and will be ridden by Salvador Martinez.

Princess Jesse, a homebred sophomore daughter of Jesse James Jr owned and trained by Vance Mikkelson of Belen, New Mexico, drew post 9 and will be ridden by Alfredo Sigala. Princess Jesse has won four of seven starts, including three stakes, and has banked $200,375 this year.

King Rick Rack Stakes

Victor M. Diaz’s Coronas Boy drew post 7 for Wednesday’s 870-yard, $50,000 King Rick Rack Stakes.

A homebred 7-year-old son of Mr Houston trained by Martin Orona Jr., Coronas Boy has won both of his outs during the current Zia Park meet, the October 30, $140,000 New Mexico Cup 870 Championship (R), and the 870-yard, $50,000 Herman Jefferson Stakes on October 2. The gelding will be ridden by Alejandro Medellin in the King Rick Rack.

Coronas Boy’s opponents include defending champion Executive Trust, a 5-year-old gray Executive Menace gelding trained by Guadalupe Munoz Jr. for owner Sherree Meridyth. Executive Trust placed second in this year’s Herman Jefferson after having won the stakes last year.

Executive Trust will be ridden by Ruby Gonzalez from post 2.
