ALBUQUERQUE, NM—SEPTEMBER 25, 2022—Talbott veered out at the start but still managed to grab the early lead and held for a half-length victory in the $625,689 New Mexico State Fair Quarter Horse Derby at Albuquerque Downs Sunday.
Ridden by jockey Carlos Guillen Chacon, Talbott completed the 400 yards in :19.679 seconds, an 90 speed index into a 20 mph headwind. The $312,845 winners' purse boosted his earnings total to $317,905.
After finishing off-the-bard in his first four starts the son of leading New Mexico sire Big Daddy Cartel broke his maiden and the set the fastest time in the September 25 State Fair Futurity trials.
Juan Gonzalez conditions the $23,000 Ruidoso New Mexico Bred Yearling Sale graduate for owner Manuel Camacho. MJ Farms bred Talbott from the Mr Jess Perry mare Diamondia.
Also bred by MJ Farms, runner-up White Lightenin earned $125,138 for owners Denis and Julie Schoenhofer. The $32,000 Ruidoso New Mexico Bred Yearling Sale graduate,, by first-crop sire Eye Am King, is conditioned by trainer James J. Gonzales III.
Third in the Zia QH Juvenile at Ruidoso in August, White Lightenin has earned $152,138 in six starts. White Lightenin is out of the champion First Down Dash mare Alice K White.
Wood Dee Queen finished a head back to make it a MJ Farms bred trifecta.
A $34,000 Ruidoso New Mexico Bred Yearling Sale graduate by Eye Am King, Wood Dee Queen is conditioned by Fred Danley and races for owners J & SM, Inc., Don Reynolds and Lane Reynolds. The $75,083 third-place payday raises the filly's earnings to $86,923. She is out of the Woodbridge mare Miss Woody Dee.
Codex, Flashtoglory, Drinking Champane, Blazin Chamisa, Shes So Salty, Rc Jessa Flashn and Fine Am Eye completed the field.
