Willis Family Red Hot, Winning Nine Of 11 Training Races Thursday At Remington Park

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—FEBRUARY 27, 2020—It was an all-Willis family day in Thursday’s training races at Remington Park. Between 2019 Remington Park leading trainer Eddie Willis and his sons, Eddie Lee and Kasey, they won seven of the first eight training races at Remington Park, and nine total.

Thursday’s training races were conducted into headwinds ranging from 10-17mph. Sunny skies with temperatures reaching the low 60s made for a pleasant session for all, and the track was fast.

Eddie, a 10-time seasonal leading trainer at Remington Park won the first, fourth, fifth, sixth, eighth, 10th and 11th races, finishing with seven winners overall. Kasey Willis won the third race with the Paint, Triple Sab O Tage, and Eddie Lee won the seventh race with BV Rocky Top, who finished just a short nose in front of his dad’s charge, Contender.

Eddie is the reigning Remington Park champion trainer and apparently his barn has remained smoking hot into 2020. He saddled the fastest time of the day in the eighth race with A Political Passion, a 2-year-old colt by Apollitical Jess, out of the Corona Cartel mare Passion for Corona. A Political Passion finished in :13.507 for an 80 speed index, while moving into a 13mph southerly headwind. The colt is owned by James Sills of Cedar Hill, Texas. Sills was the leading owner at Remington Park in 2019.

Eddie’s winners on Thursday included I Like Me Best in the first, (:13.704 seconds, 72 speed index, owned by Sills); Jessa Bit of Candy in the fourth, (:13.703, 72 for owner Ed Melzer); Facing the Fire in the fifth, (:14.049, 56, Eddie also owns); El Jefe the Boss in the sixth, (:13.931, 63 for owner Mike Vaughn); Apollitical Gold in race 10, (:13.914, 64 for owner Grant R. Cox Revocable Trust) and Kiss Me Suzy in the 11th and final race, (:13.868, 66, for owners Connie Young and John Herrick).

In Kasey’s win, Triple Sab O Tage (Paint) covered the 250 yards in :13.928 for a 63 speed index for owner Alexia Willis, yet another Willis family member.

El Jefe the Boss is a 2-year-old colt by Apollitical Jess, out of the Strawfly Special mare Sting Scorpion Sting, making him a full brother to Admiral Sting, who has won 7-of-20 lifetime races, including two stakes races at Remington Park last year – the Grade 2 Mr Jet Moore Stakes and the Grade 3 Mighty Deck Three Stakes. Admiral Sting was voted the 2019 American Quarter Horse Association Champion Aged Stallion.

In other training races Thursday, the winners, Quarter Horses unless otherwise noted, not trained by a member of the Willis family, were:

  • Race 2: Coyotee Dale, (:13.928, 63 speed index) trainer Shane Seaton, owned by Dusty Rose Ranch
  • Race 9: CRM Merle Girl, (:14.147, 55) trainer Stacy Charette-Hill, owned by Joanna Johnson
