HOBBS, NM—OCTOBER 13, 2019—Fastest qualifier Fantastic Feature Jr was speed all the way while holding off Fyre Wall by a neck to win the $185,505 Hobbs America Derby(G3) Sunday afternoon at Zia Park. Breaking New Ground was a head back in a blanket finish to get third.
Ridden by jockey Jaime Leos, Fantastic Feature Jr completed the 440 yards in :21.801 seconds, equaling a 94 speed-index into a 5 mph head wind. Trainer Juan Gonzalez saddled the son of Fantastic Corona Jr to his third win in 12 starts and the $89,042 winner's purse boosted his bankroll to $126,695.
Joe Rios owns the Oklahoma-bred gelding out of PT Feature Dash by Feature Mr Jess. Bred by A.C. Taylor, Fantastic Feature Jr was a finalist in the First Down Dash Stakes at Ruidoso Downs on September 1.
Breaking New Ground flew late under jockey Francisco Ramirez, Jr., to pick up $15,304 for third. Todd Fincher trains the son of world champion One Dashing Eagle for R H Resources. Ray Herring bred the sorrel gelding in Oklahoma from the Splash Bac mare Heavenly Trip. A finalist in the Rainbow Derby(G1) at Ruidoso Downs over the summer, Breaking New Ground has earned $124,134.
Majestic Mr Perry, New News, Badhabit Jess, First N Sassy, Pilotpointdashing, Volcom One and Reyna Azul completed the field.
