RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—AUGUST 17, 2019—Rogelio Marquez Jr.'s American Hussle posted his first win when he scorched the Ruidoso Downs straightaway to set the fastest-qualifying time of :21.132 for 440 yards in the trials to the Grade 1, $1,550,855 All American Derby on Sunday afternoon.
The horses with the 10-fastest times from the 12 trials qualified for the All American Derby on September 1 at Ruidoso Downs. The horses with the next 10-fastest times gained priority to race in the $100,000 First Down Dash on September 1 at Ruidoso Downs.
American Hussle humbled his rivals in the 11th trial on this way to the two-and-three-quarter-length win.
"He just left the start gate well and went on a finished well," jockey James Flores said. "He's doing really well now and ran a good race."
Trained by Marcos Carrizales, American Hussle had made six previous starts and managed a pair of seconds and two third-place finishes. The son of Apollitical Jess has never competed in a stakes race.
