Mr Downtown Zip (#5) prevails over Pappajeto (#6) in the $20,550 Wyoming Downs Renegade Sports Derby on Sunday.

EVANSTON, WY—AUGUST 18, 2019—Mr Downtown Zip and Jose Guzman broke on top and maintained a narrow but steady lead to win the $20,550 Wyoming Downs Renegade Sports Derby on Sunday afternoon.

The Jess Zoomin gelding posted a time of 19.700 in the 400-yard race and earned a speed index of 98. He was the eighth fastest qualifier from two trials held on August 3 in Evanston.

Mr Downtown Zip ($21.40) is owned by Raul Moreno and is trained by Martha Maldonado. He was bred in Wyoming by S Bar S, out of Miss Corona Downtown, by The Corona.

Mr Downtown Zip is now three for eight in his career and has lifetime earnings of $17,417. The Wyoming Downs Renegade Sports Derby was his first stakes win but he finished third in the 89 an Under Stakes at Wyoming earlier this summer and qualified to the Open Derby at Laurel Brown in June.

Finishing just a nose behind the winner, Pappajeto and Nakia Ramirez nearly caught Mr Downtown Zip for the win. Pappajeto is a triple play for David Burt, who trains the gelding as well as owns and bred with Linda Burt in Utah. He is by Pappasito and is out of Streaking Secrets, by A Streak of Cash.

The second fastest qualifier to the final, Pappajeto has finished no worse than third in four starts in his 3-year-old year and was third in the Open Derby.

One Dashing Dream and Jose Figueroa completed the trifecta, showing late speed to gain third. The winner of the 2018 Utah Bred Futurity at Wyoming Downs, One Dashing Dream was also third in her trial for Sunday’s derby.

One Dashing Dream is trained by Diana Garfias for owner Aron Saenz. She was bred in Utah by the Marla Robinson Family Trust, by One Dashing Eagle and out of Coronas Dreamgirl, by Corona Cartel.

Completing the field were Rate Me Hight, Sheza Vital Secret, Jess Echeson, Femme Fatalia, Bp Fling Your Paint, Attorney Fees and Ss Happy Dance.
