Olena Sangria Wins Co-Featured Allowance Feature On Sunday’s Remington Card

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—MAY 19, 2019— Olena Sangria was the second-longest price on the toteboard Sunday night in a co-featured allowance race at Remington Park, but as the saying goes, this 4-year-old mare can’t read the program.

It didn’t bother this daughter of Dashair, out of The Corona mare, a Paint, MT Rob This Corona, as she won in strong fashion at 10-1 odds. With jockey David Brown in the irons, Olena Sangria broke third from the gate from the post-position three and made up enough ground to win going away by three-quarters of a length.

Tana Caldwell trains Olena Sangria for owner Robbin Caldwell of Jones, Okla. The winner was bred in Oklahoma by Makynzie Brown & Robbin Caldwell.

Political Candy, the 5-2 favorite for the 400 yard-race, restricted to 3-year-olds-and-older that had never won two races lifetime. Olena Sangria had tried 17 times and only reached the winner’s circle once, winning at Fair Meadows in Tulsa in a maiden race last July.

She did, however, wake up in a big way last time out at Remington Park, losing by only a neck in third place among claiming $20,000 non-winners of two at 400 yards. This time the 400 yards was perfect as the horse showed improvement.

Olena Sangria stopped the timer in 19.718 seconds on a fast track for a speed index of 90, the highest of her career. If you are a believer in back class, however, this mare did warrant some consideration under these conditions. Only two years ago when she was a 2-year-old filly, she qualified for the $1,155,000 Heritage Place Futurity at Remington Park and finished seventh a 16-1 odds.

The take in Sunday’s race for Olena Sangria was $15,784 from the purse of $25,600. Her career record is now 18 starts, two wins, three seconds and three thirds for lifetime earnings of $94,276.

In the other allowance race on the card, heavy favorite Barbie Tales was disqualified from third after a bumping incident shortly out of the gate, leaving the filly from post position one, Shes Relentlesswagon as the winner of the race for owner/trainer Leonardo Alcala of Ft. Myers, Fla..

Jockey Froylan Ramirez got the victory in the saddle. It was the second win in three races lifetime for this 2-year-old daughter of Hes Relentless, out of the PYC Paint Your Wagon mare Sassie Wagon. Earlier this meet, Shes Relentlesswagon had broken her maiden in a trial for the Remington Park Futurity but didn’t qualify for the finals. Instead, she ran in the $100,000 Remington Park Juvenile Stakes, finishing sixth.

Temptobthebest was the second-place finisher in the allowance race for 2-year-olds going 330 yards, and the fourth-place finisher Miss Trainwreck was placed third after the disqualification of the favorite, Barbie Tales.

Racing continues Thursday night at 6pm with 11 races scheduled. The Thursday card starts a special holiday racing week at Remington Park that continues through Memorial Day Monday, May 27.

Racing begins at 6pm Thursday-Saturday, May 23-25. Racing starts at 1:30pm on Sunday, May 26. The holiday program on Memorial Day begins at 11am.
