Summertime Favorite Posts Fastest Gate Work By A 2-Year-Old

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—MARCH 25, 2017— Paul Jones and Thompson Racing LLC’s Summertime Favorite posted fastest gate work by a 2-year-old at Los Alamitos this year after covering the 220 yards in :12 flat from the outside post on Saturday morning. A total of 45 2-year-old Quarter Horses worked on Saturday with nine of them recording works of :12.30 or faster.

The fastest of all was Summertime Favorite, a filly by Favorite Cartel out of Summertime Quickie, which also had the morning’s fastest of 43 works here on March 12. Her first drill was a :12.30 work, but she was three ticks faster in her next outing. Summertime Favorite broke in after leaving the inside post and continued to move inward during the drill, but her quickness and speed make her a filly to watch in 2017.

Summertime Favorite is a full sister of her connection’s multiple stakes winner Flay, the winner of the Spencer Childers California Breeders Championship Handicap and the Dillingham Handicap. Summertime Favorite is also a half-sister to the champion millionaire Foose, the winner of the 2008 Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity and 2009 Grade 1 Los Alamitos Super Derby.

Denny Boer’s Valiant Nights and Double Bar S Ranch’s Foose Jenner tied for the morning’s second fastest clocking of :12.20. Valiant Nights is a gelding by Valiant Hero and out of Shyann Cash, third place finisher to champion Hawkish in the 2003 Kindergarten Futurity. Shyann Cash also won that year’s California Breeders Freshman Stakes and ran in the $865,000 Golden State Futurity. This was Valiant Night’s second gate work.

Trained by Paul Jones, Foose Jenner was also recording his second work. The Foose colt is a half-brother to El Primero Del Ano Derby fastest qualifier That Rico. This is also the family of He Could Be The One, a three-time stakes winner of over $100,000.

J. Francisco Diaz’s Casino Baccarat posted a :12.30 work for the second time. Bred by Steve Burns DVM, Casino Baccarat is also by Favorite Cartel. His dam is Baccarat Bar, a half-sister to Dont Pass Bar, the dam of 2015 champion aged mare and multiple Grade 1 winner Quirky and Governor’s Cup Futurity finalist A Bit Quirky.

We Have A Favorite, A Political Lady, Unblemished, Los Fire and Land Of Ahhs each posted time of :12.30. Also sired by Favorite Cartel, We Have A Favorite is a half-sister of One Sweet Winner, the third place finisher in this year’s Denim N Diamonds Handicap.

A Political Lady is a half-sister of Thrice Wise, the winner of the 2015 John Deere California Juvenile Challenge. Their mother is Another Wise Lady, a finalist to the 2009 La Primera Del Ano Derby and a top three finisher in that year’s Go Josie Go Handicap and 2008 California Breeders Freshman Stakes.

Unblemished’s dam is Without Fault, an allowance winner at Los Alamitos from the family of solid runners Pegger, Perfect Mom, Frosty Younger and Pee Wee Champ. Land of Ahhs is from the family of 870-yard Tricky Dust Stakes winner Bye Bye Jess, while Low Fire is from the family of Grade 1 stake winner Racy Runner, a winner of nearly $137,000.

Gate workouts will continue at Los Alamitos on Tuesday, March 28. Videos are available at losalamitos.com.
