LOS ALAMITOS, CA—JUNE 27, 2016—EG High Desert Farms’ Jess Ravin cruised to victory in the Sunday’s $20,000 Vandy’s Flash Handicap for 3-year-olds at Los Alamitos, while posting her third win in as many career starts when racing from post number one.

Ridden by Jesus Rios Ayala and trained by Yanet Rodriguez, Jess Ravin was quick out of the gate and took the lead a few steps into the 400-yard dash. The Corona Cartel filly dueled with La Primera Del Ano Derby winner Jess Good Reason during the middle part of the Vandy’s Flash before pulling away in the final 100 yards to record a solid ¾ length victory.

Jess Ravin had previously defeated fillies in the $25,000 La Pacifica Handicap also from post number one, but this time she defeated a field that included the opposite sex. Among the boys that she faced in this race were Mi Viejo, a finalist to both the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity and Golden State Million Futurity, and My Favorite Check, winner of the Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes and runner-up in the El Primero Del Ano Derby.

Jess Ravin loves the rail. In addition to her wins in the La Pacifica and Vandy’s Flash from that spot, she also won an allowance race by a jaw-dropping 2¼ lengths when making her 2016 debut on February 21. The filly has now finished in the top two in all five of her starts this year.

To go along with her three wins, she also ran second in her trial to the La Primera Del Ano and then finished second to Jess Good Reason in the final. Jess Ravin was a winner in one of two starts during her freshman campaign in 2015 and her lifetime record now stands at four wins in seven starts. Bred by You And Me Partners, the Oklahoma-bred covered the distance in :19.644 while earning $11,000 for the win. She’s earned $73,837.

“Trials to the Golden State Derby are next,” said Rodriguez referring to the derby heats at 400 yards on August 7. “She likes the one hole. She’s a very quiet filly. I never have to worry about her. She’s calm. I know she won’t sweat up or act bad in the gate.”

Cina and John Sperry’s Jess Good Reason earned $4,500 for her second place finish. The filly was Good Reason SA was being ridden for the first time by Carlos Marquez for trainer Paul Jones. Marquez picked up the mount in place of the injured Roberto Hernandez, who broke his left wrist in a spill two weeks ago. Hernandez, who was on track cheering on Jess Good Reason on Sunday, will be sidelined for two months.

Preston and Karen Cloud bred the Good Reason SA filly in Oklahoma from the Feature Mr Jess mare Jess Call Me Tieing.

Ron Hartley’s Favorite Cartel gelding My Favorite Check finished third. John Cooper conditions the homebred out of Six Checks, by Check Him Out. Tony Guymon was up. He earned $2,500 for the effort.
