LOS ALAMITOS, CA— APRIL 26, 2015—Owner Howard Nichols is off to a nice start with his 2-year-olds at Los Alamitos, as his juveniles have now posted three victories on the year, the most by an owner this season.
Nichols’ latest win came with the impressive looking colt We Like Corona in the seventh race on Sunday night, as he was in control every step of the way, crossing the finish line ¾ lengths ahead of runner-up JB Perry in this race. Ridden by Cruz Mendez for trainer Jose Flores, We Like Corona crossed the wire under a stranglehold while covering the 300 yards in :15.755.
Sired by Corona Cartel, We Like Corona is out of the mare Jess Jets, a full sister to Grade 1 stakes winner Gold Medal Jess. He was a six-time stakes winner at Los Alamitos with career earnings of $ $218,391. His stakes victories included the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Championship, First Down Dash Handicap and Dillingham Handicap.
In Sunday’s sixth race One Sweet Runaway became the first winner at Los Alamitos for freshman stallion One Sweet Jess after the filly posted an easy 1-¼ length victory.
Saddled by Danny Montes for San Gregorio Racing Stables, One Sweet Runaway ran away from her rivals right from the start, as she opened up a daylight advantage shortly after the start with jockey Saul Ramirez aboard. One Sweet Runaway covered the 300 yards in :16.006 and will likely make her next start in the trials to the Ed Burke Million Futurity on June 7. One Sweet Runaway is a half sister to Golden State Million Futurity finalists Runaway Fire and Princess Pily.
As for the young stallion One Sweet Jess, this was his first win at the Orange County oval. His first win as a sire came with the 2-year-old colt El Chaca after he won a trial to the Desert Classic Futurity at Turf Paradise on April 12.
Now standing at Burns Ranch in Menifee, California, One Sweet Jess won seven of 19 starts earned $953,592. Bred by the Allred Brothers, One Sweet Jess won the Golden State Million Futurity and Ed Burke Juvenile Stakes and was second in the Los Alamitos Super Derby. He competed in eighth stakes finals during his career.
