RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—JULY 31, 2018— Raising cancer awareness and the availability of free mammograms at Lincoln County Medical Center highlight The Race to Whip Cancer, otherwise known as Pink Day, on Saturday at Ruidoso Downs.

The Pink Day theme is expressed through all of the jockeys wearing pink silks, pink tee shirts being sold, pony horses decked out in pink and everyone is encouraged to wear pink.

An immediate goal is horsewomen along with their family and friends over 40 getting mammograms. The mammograms will be offered from August 6 through August 20. Please contact organizer Jamie Zamora, a breast cancer survivor, at (505) 328-0303 to make a reservation. They are offered in conjunction with the Race Track Chaplaincy at Ruidoso Downs.

"I know, personally, the importance of mammograms," said Zamora. "All of the volunteers and myself are honored to provide this opportunity for women connected to racing to get a mammogram. All of the money raised goes to this cause."

Just call me and sign up. That one call can mean so much."

Only skin cancer is more common than breast cancer among American women. The United States Preventative Task Force recommends that women more than 50 years old have a mammogram every two years.

Every year in the United States, more than 200,000 women get breast cancer and more than 40,000 women die from the disease.

Pink Day events include each race being sponsored, the selling of pink tee shirts, the selling of pink ribbon memorabilia, a silent auction and a raffle. The raffle item is a 34-inch pink pearl necklace from the Adobe Fine Arts and artist Janis Loverin. The price of tickets is 25 tickets for $100, six tickets for $25 or $5 per ticket.

The Pink Day festivities begin a noon, one hour before Saturday's first post time.
