First Step In Canterbury Park Development Gets Approval

SHAKOPPE, MN—DECEMBER 20, 2017—The Shakopee City Council approved a Comprehensive Plan Amendment Tuesday for Canterbury Park to build a multi-use redevelopment on a portion of the track property proposed for a portion of Canterbury Park's property.

This is an important first step in the approval process for the Canterbury Commons development.

The amendment was needed to allow for medium and high-density residential uses in the areas that are guided as entertainment.

Phase One of the track's redevelopment features Doran Companies proposed luxury multi-family residential complex. The initial phase could also include upscale townhomes, an office park, and neighborhood retail.

Construction on the first phase of the redevelopment could begin in the third quarter of 2018 depending on the remaining approval process.

"This is a great day for Shakopee. Canterbury Commons is an exciting project that will build our tax base, provide new housing options, and add high-wage jobs to our community," Skakopee mayor Bill Mars said in a Canterbury Park news release. "I am very proud we were able to get this amendment passed so we can continue to work with Canterbury Park and Doran Companies as they move forward with their plans."

The CPA required a super-majority approval by four of five council members. One dissenting vote was cast by councilman Matt Lehman.
