Impressive Inductees Placed Into Ruidoso Downs’ Racehorse Hall of Fame

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—JUNE 24, 2017—Owner Dutch Masters III, jockey James Lackey, trainer Bubba Werner and Heartswideopen were the select and impressive class of 2017 inducted into the Ruidoso Downs Racehorse Hall of Fame on Friday night at Ruidoso Downs.

Each year, one owner/breeder, one jockey, one trainer and one horse are inducted into the Hall of Fame,

Dutch Masters III has had multiple configurations, however the one constant has been Dr. James Streelman. His primary partner has been Denny Boer. They have been best friends since the first grade.

The Streelman-Boer combination in Dutch Masters III was the owner and breeder of three champions – Four Forty Blast, Secret Card and Higher Fire.

Boer downsized his racing operation and then teamed up once again with Streelman in Dutch Masters III several years ago. The longtime friends found success with Chazaq, winner of the 2016 Grade 1, $1,070,000 Ed Burke Memorial Futurity.

Dutch Masters III has won 17 Grade1 stakes. Their Meteoric finished third in the All American Futurity. Doug Benson was also a member of Dutch Masters III on Meteoric.

James Lackey was a “money rider” who won 13 Grade 1 stakes, highlighted by two victories in the Champion of Champions. He won this prestigious 440-yard classic at Los Alamitos with 1985 world champion Cash Rate and 1987 world champion First Down Dash. They each were named world champion the year that they won the Champion of Champions.

Lackey also won the Los Alamitos Championship with Cash Rate, Los Alamitos Derby with First Down Dash, the Dash For Cash Derby with First Down Dash, the Kansas (Ruidoso) Futurity with Okey Dokey Baby and the Ed Burke Memorial Futurity with Flomont.

Trainer Werner won major quarter horse stakes races. He took the All American Derby and the El Primero Del Ano Derby with Mito Wise Dancer, the Kansas (now Ruidoso) Futurity with Gentlemens Feature and the World’s Championship Classic at Ruidoso Downs with Bar Roula.

The winner of stakes races at seven different tracks, Werner also trained the great Come Six to wins in the Los Alamitos Invitational Championship, World’s Championship Classic and the Rocky Mountain Quarter Horse Association Derby.

Trained by Ruidoso Downs Racehorse Hall of Fame member Carl Draper, Heartswideopen won the 2007 Ruidoso Futurity and the All American Futurity. Draper passed on the Rainbow Futurity with the filly. She came back the following year to win the Ruidoso Derby and the Rainbow Derby.

Heartswideopen was honored as the 2007 champion two-year-old and two-year-old filly and then the 2008 champion three-year-old and champion three-year-old filly.

The powerful daughter of Feature Mr Jess and the Dash For Cash daughter Dashing Phoebe, Heartswideopen was bred by Kirk Goodfellow, raced by La Feliz Montana Ranch LLC and is currently in Julianna Hawn Holt’s stellar broodmare band.
