HOBBS, NM—OCTOBER 20, 2014—The pink horse is guaranteed to win every race at Zia Park on Saturday because all jockeys will wear pink silks to benefit breast cancer awareness and research efforts on Race to Whip Cancer Day.

Fans that wear pink to the Hobbs, New Mexico track will receive a free gift, and all proceeds raised from pink t-shirt and memorabilia sales will benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. Other Zia Park racing officials, including outriders and the gate crew, will be decked out in pink in much the same way that other sports have embraced the color during the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month of October.

“The neatest thing is that the horsemen at Zia are so willing to help,” said Jamie Zamora, the event’s organizer and a breast cancer survivor. “Everybody is so willing to go all in for such a great cause.”

After Zamora inaugurated Race to Whip Cancer Day at Zia Park in 2009, she has spread the event to other New Mexico racetracks Albuquerque, Ruidoso Downs, and Sunland Park. The 2013 Race to Whip Cancer Day at Zia Park raised $3,500, according to Zamora.

Race to Whip Cancer Day will kick off one of Zia Park’s biggest weekends of the season with New Mexico Cup Day on Sunday. As the richest day of state-bred stakes races in the United States, New Mexico Cup Day will feature 12 stakes for New Mexico-bred Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses with purses totaling $2 million.
