LOS ALAMITOS, CA—OCTOBER 5, 2014—The Los Alamitos Equine Sale continued a robust market on Sunday as the 10th annual sale posted huge across-the-board gains.
The sale average of $18,273 was up by 20% from $15,201 and the $11,500 median represented a 35% gain over last year's $8,500. The two sessions saw 257 head sold for $4,695,100, a 5% increase over last year's total for a much larger number of horses sold, 295.
Three yearlings sold for $100,000. The session topper Sunday was a $220,000 colt by Walk Thru Fire and on Saturday a $200,000 colt by Corona Cartel had the highest bid.
“It was a success,” said Dr. Steve Burns, one of the partners of the Los Alamitos Equine Sale and the second leading consignor. “We experienced hot weather this weekend, but the sale still enjoyed a good crowd. We are pleased with the results.”
The second-high seller, Hip 184 The Cartels Crown, brought a final bid of $200,000 on Saturday from Carlos Raynal. Burns Ranch, Agent for Balgo Racing Team, Inc. consigned the Corona Cartel half-brother to G3 winner Feature Malinche. The second dam produced champion aged horse Mongoose Jet Eye.
Raynal also bought the sale's third high-seller Hip 43 Perrys Sweetheart, a Mr Jess Perry half-sister to world champion One Dashing Eagle for $175,000. Burns Ranch, Agent was the consignor.
Raynal led all buyers with three purchases totaling $458,000. Abigail Kawananakoa had the one for $220,000 and Ron Hartley singed the ticket for two head totaling $117,000.

Mr Jess Perry was the leading yearling sire (by average with two or more sold) with three head that sold for a $75,833 average. Corona Cartel had five head average $63,500 and First Down Dash had four yearlings average $49,250. Favorite Cartel was the leading first-crop sale sire (by average with two or more sold) with 23 yearlings that averaged $17,348. Kiddy Up was the leading covering sire (by average with two or more sold) with two in-foal mares averaging $5,700.
