Aceves Suffers Neck Fracture After Spill On Sunday

LOS ALAMITOS, CA— SEPTEMBER 14, 2014—Jockey Rodrigo Aceves fractured his neck, but is conscious, alert and able to move his arms and legs after hitting the ground during the third race on Sunday at Los Alamitos. Aceves remains hospitalized for further examination at Los Alamitos Medical Center as of Monday morning.

Aceves hit the ground when his mount, the 2-year-old Bigtime Bonnies, clipped heels during the running of the third trial to the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity. The gelding by Bigtime Favorite did not fall and continued to run to the finish line. Bigtime Bonnies walked away from the incident under his own power.

Aceves is one of the all-time leading Quarter Horse jockeys at Los Alamitos. He currently ranks sixth all-time in Quarter Horse wins with 1,736. He has won 89 Quarter Horse stakes races at Los Alamitos in his career, including the Governor’s Cup Futurity aboard Discontent earlier this year.
