Q-RACING JOURNAL—AUGUST 20, 2014—Horseman Harold Chenault died August 15 at his home in Rockwall, Texas, surrounded by family and friends.

Harold was born on September 22, 1946, in Dallas, Texas, to Frank Chenault and Laura Sauls Chenault, at the closest hospital to the farm and ranch where he grew up in the Dalrock community. They lived on a portion of his grandfather Sam Sauls’ property in the Dalrock community, now a part of Rowlett.

He graduated from Rockwall High School where he was a good student and an outstanding athlete, lettering four years in basketball, track and his true love, football. He earned All District, All State and Honorable Mention High School All American status in football. Harold also played in the National High School North-South game his senior year. He had many scholarship offers and elected to play at Texas Tech University. A heart condition forced Harold out of football and he later transferred to East Texas State University, now Texas A&M Commerce. In college, he became a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, met and married his wife, Vaundaugh, sold insurance and became a formidable calf roper.

An AQHA life member and 10-year cumulative breeder, in his own name since 1992, he owned horses who earned more than $578,000. He also bred the earners of more than $678,000, with 30 winners from 44 starters. Among them were Grade 1 runner Happy Trick ($113,626), stakes runner Bigtime Feature ($58,645), Grade 3-placed runners Katies Memories ($50,647) and Freddiesonahotstreak ($77,863).

Harold also leaves many friends who loved and respected him. Spending forty years in commercial real estate, he was instrumental in numerous developments in the North Texas area. Harold was generous with his time and treasure but never sought recognition. He believed in the power of caring and will be remembered for his integrity, honestly and loyalty by many.

Harold’s death came as a shock to many because of his quiet resolve and desire to spare his friends from the physical burdens he carried silently. His respect for his fellow man, animals and the earth was unshakable. Harold will be missed by his fellow brokers and investors, North Texas Commercial Association of Realtors, The Land Council and the American Quarter Horse Association. He also leaves a hole in the hearts of his family that will eventually heal but will never be replaced.

Harold is survived by his wife of 43 years, Vaundaugh Halley Chenault, his son, Reed and daughter-in-law, Yafa, and grandson, Brennan. He also leaves behind his brother, Sam Chenault of Rockwall, niece, Erin Chenault Burks of Hudson, Ohio, nephew, Tyson Chenault of Garland, and two young men Harold took under his wing as teenagers, Ben Alexander and Jose Rubio.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, August 24, at 3 p.m. at the Hilton Hotel at The Harbor in Rockwall, Texas. Dress is casual.
