The Louisiana Cartel Gets First Stakes Winner

SEGUIN, TX—JULY 26, 2015—Multiple Grade 2 winner and first crop sire The Louisiana Cartel sired his first stakes winner on Saturday night when Cartels Pop Pop won the $413,775 TQHA Sale Futurity(RG2) at Retama Park.

Esmeralda and Chad Peck of Gillette, Texas own the son of The Louisiana Cartel out of the Oak Tree Special mare Oak Trees Pop Pop. Gary and Richard Kurz and Sheri Gaster bred him in Texas. Peck purchased Cartels Pop Pop at last year’s TQHA Sale for $33,000 and earned a check in the amount of $184,130 for the futurity victory.

With fastest qualifier Sissy Cartel running second, that meant the very successful freshman sire had the top two finishers in the richest race at Retama Park which should move him into the #2 Leading First Crop Sire of Money Earners position next week.

“This was his first stakes winner,” said Haddad. “We could not be more pleased.”

Fastest qualifier Sissy Cartel, got lose behind the gate, but was quickly returned and Ignacio Bustamante guided her to a second-place finish. Yasmine Fierro conditions the filly out of Hot Regrets, by Hot Colours for owner Anahi Martinez. Bred in Texas by Eleazar Martinez, Sissy Cartel was a $7,000 repurchase ast last year's sale and pocketed $91,032 for her effort in the TQHA Sale Futurity(RG2).

From a limited number of starters in his first crop to race The Louisiana Cartel has sired 15 winners, 1 stakes winner, 4 stakes placed with earnings in excess of $472,000 and average earnings per starter of over $12,400.

His top performers include Cartels Pop Pop (2 wins at 2, $190,435, TQHA Sale Futurity-RG2), Sissy Cartel (2 wins, $94,932, 2nd TQHA Sale Futurity(RG2), EC Jet One (Winner at 2, $70,121, 3rd Sam Houston Futurity-G2), Js Abel Dasher (2 wins at 2, $34,183, 2nd FL Lady Bug Stakes), Teves (Winner, $14,208, 2nd Fair Meadows Juvenile, Miss Huerfanita (Winner, 3rd TQHA Futurity), etc.

The Louisiana Cartel also had the 2015 TQHA Yearling Sale topper over the weekend when Louisiana Cricket brought the sale's highest bid of $140,000 from Billy Tiffee. Double S Farm consigned the colt out of Quick Lil Cricket, by Royal Quick Dash, as agent for Mary Denson. Louisiana Cricket is a half-brother to G3 winner The Field Cricket ($138,846).
