GRAVATA, PERNAMBUCO, BRZ—MAY 25, 2015—Guy Peixoto's three-time AQHA Racing Champion Ketel Won died Sunday in Brazil due to complications from colic.
The 12-year-old son of leading sire Stoli, out of the Streakin Six mare Sixy Lady, was bred and raced by R.D. Hubbard. Trained by Paul Jone, he won or placed in 15 of 19 career starts and earned $651,740.
His wins include The Championship at Sunland Park(G1), Zia Park Championship-twice(G1), All American Gold Cup-twice(G3) and Higheasterjet Handicap(G3). Ketel Won was second in The Championship at Sunland Park(G1), Lovington Handicap(G2), Mr Jet Moore Stakes (G3) and third in the Los Alamitos Invitational Championship(G1) and Hobbs America Derby. Ketel Won also qualified to the All American Derby(G1) and Rainbow Quarter Horse Derby at Ruidoso Downs.
He began his stud career at JEH Stallion Station's New Mexico-Division and stood for a short time at Hart Farms in Louisiana. In 2014 he was sold and exported to Brazil where he stood at Peixoto's Rancho Horizonte.
From a limited number of starters in four crops to race in the US, Ketel Won sired 31 winners, 2 stakes winners, 2 stakes-placed with progeny earnings of more than $1.13 million and average earnings per starter of $11,393.
Among his top performers are Kia Won (4 wins, $177,020, New Mexican Spring Fling, etc.), An Absolut Diamond (6 wins, $163,685, Challenger Six Handicap, etc.), Vuvu Zela SI 87 (winner, $38,471, 3rd New Mexico State Fair QH Breeders' Derby-RG3), Won For The Road SI 92 (winner, $13,953, 3rd Cherry Creek Futuirty-RG3), Royal Kettle SI 98 (3 wins, $77,696), Krazy Good SI 93 (2 wins, $69,291), Absolut One SI 96 (4 wins, $61,105), etc.
