Chicky Chicky Kai Sets Top Mark In New Mexico Classic Derby Trials

Chicky Chicky Kai Sets Top Mark In New Mexico Classic Derby Trials

HOBBS, NM—OCTOBER 11, 2021—Coming off a second-place effort in the New Mexico State Fair Derby(RG3) on September 19th, Chicky Chicky Kai raced to a neck win over Woodys Gold to set the fastest qualifying time for the New Mexico Classic Derby(RG2) Monday afternoon at Zia Park.

The 10 fastest qualifiers, from two trials contested for state-bred 3-year-olds, will return to Zia Park on Sunday, October 31st to vie for the winner's share of a $200,000-est. purse going 400 yards.

Under jockey Sergio Becerra, Jr., Chicky Chicky Kai completed the 400 yards in :19.566 seconds, equaling a 96 speed index into an 18 mph crosswind. It was the fourth win 10 career starts for the daughter of multiple stakes sire Jess A Chicks.

Trainer Larry Chavez saddled the chestnut filly for owner Mike Parker. Bred by Dirk Jones, from the Brookstone Bay mare Wahene Kai, Chicky Chicky Kai has banked over $100,000.

Hollyn Bootie defeated post time favorite Bigg Dee by a head in the second trial to set the second fastest time of :19.582 seconds, also a 96 speed index into a 14 mph crosswind. Tanner Thedford had the riding call aboard the daughter of leading New Mexico sire Big Daddy Cartel.

Fourth against open company in the All American Oaks in her last start, Holly Bootie races for owner-breeders Mark and Annette McCloy and is trained by Trey Wood. The graded stakes winning filly, out of Datona Doll by Jesse James Jr, has earned $232,744. She was also third in the Zia QH Derby(RG2) at Ruidoso in July. .

New Mexico State Fair Derby(RG3) winner Bigg Dee held on for the third fastest time of :19.598 seconds. James J. Gonzales, II named Mario Delgado to ride the Big Daddy Cartel gelding for owner Rex Wells.

Bred by MJ Farms, from the Woodbridge mare Miss Woody Dee, Bigg Dee has won eight of 14 career starts and banked $326,560. He also won the Zia QH Derby(RG2) last July.

MJ Farms also bred 4th fastest qualifier, the aforementioned Woodys Gold, and 7th fastest qualifier Leading Cartel.
