Post-time favorite Papas Coleen (#3) winning the the $30,347 Alberta Bred Derby at Century Downs on Sunday afternoon.

ROCKY VIEW, AB—SEPTEMBER 15, 2019—Papas Coleen, with Ceasar Cervantes aboard, was a decisive winner of the $30,347 Alberta Bred Derby at Century Downs on Sunday afternoon.

Papas Coleen ($7.30) was the post-time favorite in the 400-yard stake for Alberta-bred 3-year-olds. The final time was :20.136; the winner earned a 73 speed index.

Papas Coleen is trained by Darcy Hawkes for owner and breeder Donalda Cochrane. The First Timber filly is out of Cash in This Lane, by Leins Leinster.

The Alberta Bred Derby was the first stakes win for Papas Coleen. She is now four for nine lifetime with $30,428 in earnings. As a 2-year-old, she qualified for the Canada Quarter Horse Cup Futurity (G3), also at Century. This year, she qualified for and placed second in the Adequan Evergreen Park Derby Challenge.

Jb Easy First Down and Ricardo Moreno finished in second, three-quarters of a length behind Papas Coleen and a neck in front of Last Unicorn.

William Leech trains Jb Easy First Down for owner Alison Christie. James Butterfield bred the First Down Leaving gelding out of Tisa Easy Effort, by Holland Ease. Jb Easy First Down only has one career win in 12 starts but has competed in four stakes, including a second-place effort in the Alberta Stallion Stakes Derby in July.

Third-place finisher Last Unicorn is trained by Ken McFarlane, who co-owns with Pat Debona; Adrian Gonzalez had the call. McFarlane also bred the gelding, by Unification and out of Teller Reba, by Teller Cartel.

As a 2-year-old, Last Unicorn qualified for the Alberta Bred Futurity (G3). Earlier this year, he qualified for the Evergreen Park Derby Challenge at Grands Prairie.

Completing the field were Timbersknightryder, Eye N Mighty, Jb Runaway Special, Phenomabomb, Poutn and Zoomin, Sasses Quick Silver, Goldin Warrior and Royale Special.
