Top Four Qualifiers Come Out of Third Trial for Speedhorse Derby

Top Four Qualifiers Come Out of Third Trial for Speedhorse Derby

TULSA, OK—JULY 13, 2019—A blanket-finish in the third trial, led by Watah Litical Jess, included the top four qualifiers to the Speedhorse Derby on Saturday night at Fair Meadows in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

With a strong surge under jockey Cody Smith, Watah Litical Jess got to the wire a head in front of Tarish to post the fastest qualifying time of :17.434 seconds, a 101 speed index into an 8 mph crosswind.

Stepping up from a $20,000 claiming win at Remington Park on May 31, Watah Litical Jess got his second consecutive win for owner Diego Meza. Mary Meza conditions the son of leading sire Apollitical Jess from the multiple stakes producing Shazoom mare Lotawatah. Watah Litical Jess has compiled a (10) 3-0-3 record and banked $30,667. Steve Holt is the breeder.

Coming off a second-place effort in the Jack Brooks Stakes on May 27, Tarish also earned a 101 speed index and the second fastest clocking of :17.447 seconds for owner J. Lloyd Yother. Dee Keener trains the gelded son of two-time champion Prospect To The Top from the Grade 1 winning and multiple graded producing Shazoom mare Fast Prize Zoom.

Daniel Torres rode the brown gelding who has compiled a (11) 3-5-1 record and earned $78,177. William Smith is bred the 3-year-old in Oklahoma.

Saratoga Return, under jockey Mario Delgado, was a neck back to score the third fastest clocking of :17.490 seconds, a 99 speed index. R.L. Rick Robinson trains the stakes winning daughter of High Rate Of Return for owner Marili Mendez. Efrain Mendez bred the earner of nearly $80,000 form the Mr Eye Opener mare Johns Party Girl.

Completing the superfecta a head back was Docs Kansas Rep, ridden by jockey James Flores and trained by Kenny Laymon. Fourth in the Heritage Place Derby(G3) in his last start, the son of Louisiana Senator races for Regina Laymon. Bred by JK Running Horses LLC, from the FDD Dynasty mare Docs Dynasty 123, Docs Kansas Rep secured the fourth fastest time of :17.503, a 98 speed index. He has earned $53,511.
