Mr Riptide Leads Qualifiers To Zia Futurity at Ruidoso Downs

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—JULY 12, 2019—Mark and Annette McCloy's Mister Riptide easily pulled away from his rivals in the last of 11 trials to post the fastest-qualifying time to the $433,129 Zia Futurity(RG1) for New Mexico-breds at Ruidoso Downs on Friday afternoon.

MJ Farms of Veguita, New Mexicfo bred six of 10 Zia Futurity(RG1) finalists including the top three qualifiers.

The horses with the 10-fastest trial times qualify for the Zia Futurity on July 28. The Zia Futurity offers the largest purse during the Zia Festival during the final weekend of July at Ruidoso Downs.

Mister Riptide raced the 400 yards in :19.483 to gain the two-and-three-quarter-length victory under Ricky Ramirez.

The Woodbridge-sired gelding came into the trials of a fifth-place finish in the $404,357 Mountain Top Futurity at Ruidoso Downs on June 15.

Trained by Trey Wood, Mister Riptide set the co-second-fastest qualifying time to the Mountain Top Futurity.

Mister Riptide was purchased for $22,000 at the Ruidoso New Mexico-bred Yearling Sale.

"It was getting near the end of the sale and we we're looking for a filly," Mark McCloy said. "We saw him and bought him even though he was a gelding.

"I want to thank the entire Wood crew. They do it. I just pay the bill."

Diamond Racing Stables' Six Pack Fame easily handled his rivals in the sixth trial to establish the second-fastest-qualifying time of :19.614.

"He was on the lead from the start," winning jockey Sergio Becerra Jr. said. "He tried to go out a little so I went to the right hand (with the crop) and he straightened out."

A gelding by Jesse James Jr, Six Pack Fame has stakes experience with a fourth-place finish in the $393,483 New Mexican Spring Futurity for New Mexico-breds at Sunland Park back in May.

The Jose Luis Muela-trained Six Pack Fame then won his trial to the Mountain Top Futurity, however his time was not fast enough to reach the finals.

Ken and Kathy Crawford's Zee Daddy showed his promise when he humbled his rivals in the third trial with a one-and-one-half-length win and the third-fastest qualifying mark of :19.698.

Zee Daddy, a $27,000 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale purchase, was making his second start. He won his maiden in his debut at Remington Park back in April.

"We've been sitting on him," trainer Clint Crawford said. "He looked good at Remington Park, so we thought we would wait until the Zia Futurity. He's in the All American Futurity, too."
