Chicks Baby Suds Upsets New Mexico Breeders' Stakes

FARMINGTON, NM—MAY 17, 2019—In only her second career start Chicks Baby Suds (8-1) ran-down graded stakes winner Wahene Version to win the $60,000 New Mexico Breeders' Stakes Friday afternoon at SunRay Park.

Ridden by jockey Jaime Leos, Chicks Baby Suds defeated Wahene Version by a neck while completing the 400 yards in :19.536, earning a career high 97 speed index.

Trainer Cynthia Gonzalez conditions the daughter of multiple stakes sire Jess A Chicks for owner Jacob J. Simmons III. Bred in New Mexico by Mike Abraham, from the Corona Caliente mare Hot Babe Indy Suds, Chicks Baby Suds was unraced as a 2-year-old. She made her career debut on April 26 at Sunland Park, blowing away a field New Mexico-Bred 3 and 4-year-old maidens by 1-¼ lengths while recording a 91 speed index.

A $15,000 Ruidoso New Mexico-Bred Sale graduate in 2017, Chicks Baby Suds is a sister to Zia Futurity(RG1) winner Hot Indy Chick and half-sister stakes-placed and RG1-finalist Cmon Jesses Girl.

The stakes winner picked up $36,000 in the Breeders' Stakes today to bring her career earnings mark to more than $49,200.

Coming off back-to-back wins, including the restricted Grade 3 $85,000 Sunburst Stakes in her last start, Wahene Version under jockey Edgar Martinez, earned $13,200 for her runner-up effort.

Beatriz Sanchez-Carrillo saddled the Winners Version filly for owner Erick Gutierrez-Carrillo. Dirk Jones bred the chestnut filly from Wahene Kai by Brookstone Bay. The $13,200 earned today pushes Wahene Version's bankroll to $113,262.

Vintage Vaquera, ridden by jockey Esgar Ramirez, finished half-a-length back to earn $6,000 for third. Jose Luis Muela trains the Big Daddy Cartel filly for owner Diamond Racing Stables. Out of Kim Crawford, by Tres Seis, Vintage Vaquera has earning of $70,209. Mary Towslee is the breeder. Chicks Baby Suds returned $16.20 to win, $6.60 to place and $4 to show. Wahene Version paid $3.20 and 2.40 and Vintage Vaquera returned $3.20 to show.

Cd Flash And Fame, Cambria Cartel, Fifty Shots Ar and Tooflashforyou completed the field.
