Toughie Gets Revenge in Century Downs Quarter Horse Cup Classic

ROCKY VIEW, AB—OCTOBER 14, 2018—Defeated by several horses in the field in her last two starts, Toughie turned the tables and returned to her winning ways in the $10,403(US) Quarter Horse Cup Classic (not black type) to open the Century Downs card on Sunday afternoon.

The even-money post-time favorite, with Ricardo Moreno aboard, covered the classic 440-yard distance in a final time of 22.465.

Toughie’s wire-to-wire victory was the 17th of her career. The 5-year-old mare has multiple stakes victories and has earned $189,330 in 26 starts, though this was her first win in four starts at Century Downs.

William Leech trains the daughter of Stel Corona for owner Charles Stojan. She was bred in California by Ed Allred, out of the Hawkish mare Hard Lining.

Honor the Fast Man defeated Toughie by a neck two starts back but finished second by a neck to her in Sunday’s race. Martin Ortiz had the call for trainer Tom Kenway. Kenway also owns and bred the gelding in Alberta by Honor the Perry and out of the Heza Fast Man mare Buckle High.

Honor the Fast Man has won eight of his 19 career starts, including the Canada Quarter Horse Derby at Century Downs last fall and the Grande Prairie 440 Stakes in August. He has only missed the board three times and has earnings of $69,473.

The two front runners separated themselves from the rest of the field by nearly two lengths. Cruisinfourabruisin finished in third by a length with Alejandro Hernandez aboard for trainer Janice Sather. Sather also co-bred and owns the 6-year-old gelding with Barry Sather.

Cruisinfourabruisin is an Alberta-bred son of leading Canadian sire First Timber, out of Tagulator, by Royal Evening Snow. The accomplished gelding has 17 wins and 14 second-place finishes in 48 career starts, with earnings of over $164,000. His seven stakes victories include the Century Downs Cup Classic and the Century Downs 440 Stakes in 2017.

Completing the field were Gone to Be Bright, Er Café, Machete and Big Hoss Rollin. Kr Howdoyoulikemenow was scratched.
