My Big Red Dial Edges Out Bay Max in 89 and Under Stakes at Wyoming Downs

EVANSTON, WY—JULY 14, 2018—The $12,900 89 and Under Stakes (not black-type) was the feature race on the card at Wyoming Downs on Saturday, and though it looked like fastest qualifier Bay Max was a sure thing, My Big Red Dial and Jesus Valenzuela pulled the slight upset for the win.

The winning duo maintained a narrow lead throughout the race, holding off the advance of Bay Max at the wire. The time for the 400-yard race was 20.022; My Big Red Dial earned a 90 speed index.

My Big Red Dial ($18.00) was third behind Bay Max in his qualifying trial on June 30, the second of two trials for the 89 and Under Stakes.

My Big Red Dial is a Utah-bred 3-year-old son of Mark My Dial, out of the Dashing Cleat mare Vickies Larkin Dash. He was bred by his owner, Jeffrey Duncan, and is trained by Riley Moosman.

The gelding made only two starts as a 2-year-old but has never finished out of the money in his five starts to date as a 3-year-old.

Fastest qualifier Bay Max closed strongly to get up in second place and finishing a half-length in front of third place finisher Playn Captain.

Bay Max was ridden by Santiago Jimenez for trainer Ryan Christensen. He was bred in Utah by his owner, Casey Woolstenhulme, out of the Olympio mare Weekend Traffic.

The gelded son of Dashair is a multiple stakes winner with earnings in excess of $38,000. Among his wins are the Utah Bred Futurity at Wyoming Downs and the Idabet.com Futurity at Sandy Downs; Bay Max was also second in the Wyoming Downs Futurity and the Dixie Downs Derby. In ten career stars, the consistent gelding has never finished worse than third.

Playn Captain and Todd Thomas rounded out the trifecta for trainer Jay Pitcher. Playn Captain is owned by Kelly and Kyle Cook and was bred in Idaho by Mark and Peggy Brown.

The 3-year-old gelding is a son of Captain Courage, and is out of Playful Choices, by A Regal Choice. Playn Captain won the Maiden Frolic Stakes at Weber Downs in May.

Completing the field were One Dashin Chamisa, Mr Sam Bojangles, Lets Run Away and Cd Separate Dynasty. Fantastic Ticket and Favorite Wonder were scratched.
