A Toast to Brindis Posts Fastest Qualifying Time to KC Carden Wyoming Bred Derby

EVANSTON, WY —JULY 14, 2018—The last of three trials at Wyoming Downs produced the fastest qualifier to the KC Carden Wyoming Bred Derby, A Toast to Brindis. The 3-year-old son of Brindis Por Cayenne covered the 350-yard trial distance in 17.611 and earned a 93 speed index.

Clyde Smith was aboard for Saturday’s qualifying win, the gelding’s third of 2018. His only loss this year was a second-place finish in the Wyoming All Breeds Racing Association Derby at Energy Downs in June.

A Toast to Brindis is trained by Jesse Villegas. Owner Gerald Kaul also bred the gelding in Wyoming, out of A Secret Life, by Beduino Secret.

A Toast to Brindis ($7.20) defeated Little Amg by three-quarters of a length as the post-time favorite.

Little Amg, as the second-place finisher in the same trial, became the second-fastest qualifier with a time of 17.728. The 3-year-old filly was ridden by Jose Guzman for trainer Riley Moosman.

Little Amg was bred in Wyoming by her owners, Dan and Patricia Baker, by Maknmoves, out of LP Sure and Proud, by Proudest Effort.

This was the second start of the year for Little Amg; she won the first start of her 3-year-old year in a claiming event at Energy Downs. She also broke her maiden last fall at Energy Downs and has only finished out of the money twice in eight career starts.

The winner of the second trial, Dust Stone, posted the third fastest qualifying time of 17.735.

Dust Stone ($4.00) and Jesus Valenzuela defeated second-place finisher Cente Version by a length and a quarter as the post-time favorite. The winning pair earned a 90 speed figure in the gate to wire finish.

Dust Stone, by First Prize Stone, is out of the Snowbound mare Dreaming Snow. He was bred in Wyoming by his owner, Jim Nebeker, and is trained by Riley Moosman. The gelding qualified for multiple stakes as a 2-year-old but won his first stakes race as a 3-year-old in the Wyoming All Breeds Racing Association Derby at Energy Downs in June.

The first trial was won by Favorite Fire Boy ($3.80) and Oscar Cervantes for trainer Diana Garfias and owner Aron Saenz. The Favorite Cartel colt was bred by Jim Streelman or Bill Dale, out of the Walk Thru Fire mare Club Pro. Final time for the first trial was 17.828; Favorite Fire Boy was the fifth fastest qualifier.
