Coronado Cartel 2-Year-Olds Top Speedhorse Futurity Trials

TULSA, OK—JULY 13, 2018—A pair of two-year-olds by leading first crop sire Coronado Cartel battled to the wire in the 10th trial Friday night at Fair Meadows to capture the top two qualifying spots in the Grade 3 Speedhorse Futurity.

The 10 fastest qualifiers, from 12 trial races held Friday night, will return to Fair Meadows on Saturday, July 28th to vie for the winners' share of the $222,000.

Already a stakes winner this year, Fly N Tell under jockey Daniel Torres battled The Churchwellcartel to a neck win to get the top qualifying mark of :17.833 seconds, into an 8 mph headwind.

It was the third win from seven starts for the daughter of Coronado Cartel owned-trained and bred by Robert Lee Esquda. The Oklahoma homebred, from the Strawflyin Buds mare Strawfly Sister, won the Easy Jet Stakes two starts back at Remington Park in Oklahoma City. She has banked nearly $50,000 this year.

The Churchwellcartel, a Coronado Cartel gelding owned-and-raced by H.T. Churchwell and Michael Hester, held on to the second fastest clocking of :17.888 seconds. Jockey Omar Reyes had the riding call aboard the Churchwell-bred colt out of Kaywantsafastone by SF Royal Quick Flash.

Conditioned by trainer Clinton Crawford, the Speedhorse trial was just the second start for the bay who was third in his maiden at Remington Park May 20.

American Dynasty, a daughter of world champion sire FDD Dynasty, was the first of two Speedhorse Futurity finalists for owner/breeder Dunn Ranch. Conditioned by R.L. Rick Robinson, American Dynasty posted a nose win in the opening trial (Race 3) over Rappid to the get the third fastest time of :17.929 seconds.

It was the second consecutive win for the brown filly out of Southern Policy by Shazoom. Ridden by James Flores, American Dynasty broke her maiden at Fair Meadows on June 23. She has earned $15,744 this season. Matt Dunn bred the 2-year-old in Oklahoma.

Dunn's other qualifier, Dynasty First Class easily won the third trial (Race 5) by one-length under jockey Andrew Samaniego to get the 8th fastest time of :18.056. Also trained by Robinson, the bay filly is out of A Cartel Fling by Corona Cartel. It was the first win in three starts for Dynasty First Class who lit the board in both her previous starts at Remington Park prior to coming to Fair Meadows.

The aforementioned Rappid posted the fourth fastest time of :17.931 seconds. Jockey Daniel Torres rode the Ivory James 2-year-old out of the Azoom mare Azoomin With Jessie for owner-trainer Mathew Eck. Eck paid $23,000 for the gelding at the September Heritage Place Yearling Sale. Bobby D. Cox is the breeder. Rappid was a finalist in the Heritage Place Juvenile in his last start and has earned $22,324.

Trainer R.L. Rick Robinson qualified three horses and Clinton Crawford got two into the final. Stallions with multiple qualifiers were FDD Dynasty who got three, Coronado Cartel and Apollitical Jess with two each.
