PHONENIX, AZ—NOVEMBER 19, 2017—Coming off four starts on the West Coast, Cowgirl N Up returned to Turf Paradise on Sunday to defeat Skinny Kyni by half-a-length and post the top qualifying time for the AQRA-Turf Paradise President's Open Quarter Horse Futurity.
The 10 fastest qualifiers, from two trials contested Sunday afternoon at Turf Paradise, will return on Sunday December 10th to vie for the winner's share of a $17,500-added purse going 400 yards.
Under jockey Jorge Bourdieu, Cowgirl N Up drove to the top qualifying time of :19.821 seconds, a 95-speed index into a 7-mph crosswind, in the opening trial.
Matthew Fales conditions the stakes winning daughter of "top-ten" second-crop sire Texas Icon for owner/breeders Ralph and Carolyn Fales. Out of the Canth mare Secret Return, Cowgirl N Up has compiled a (7) 3-1-1 record and banked $23,744 this season.
She won the John Deere Turf Paradise Juvenile in April then traveled to Los Alamitos Race Course where she was third in The Plan Handicap and a finalist in the $129,100 Wild West Futurity.
The aforementioned Skinny Kyni held on for the second fastest clocking of :19.899 seconds, a 94-speed index. Jockey Mark Jasso had the riding call for trainer Tyler Gibbs.
A & C Racing and Roping is the owner/breeder of the multiple stakes-placed Winners Version filly out of Miss Mischievous by Streakin La Jolla. Skinny Kyni entered the trials off a third-place effort in the AQRA President's Fall Futurity on October 29th. She was also second in the Bitterroot Futurity last summer and has earned $33,199.
Dig Deeper, under jockey Justin Klaiber, raced to a neck victory, over Bp Southern Hero, in the second trial to get the fourth fastest time of :20.046 seconds, a 90-speed index into a 7-mph crosswind.
Trainer Alex J. Torres-Casas conditions the gelded son of leading third-crop sire One Sweet Jess for owner Jesus Torres. Martha Wells bred Dig Deeper in California from the Corona Cartel mare Halfpast Heartbreak. He has earned $11,285 this season.
