True Copy Gets Top Mark in Canada Cup Futurity Trials

ROCKY VIEW COUNTY, ALB—OCTOBER 1, 2017—Stakes-placed True Copy rolled a two-length win and the top qualifying time for the Canada Cup Quarter Horse Futurity Sunday afternoon at Century Downs.

The 10 fastest qualifiers, from three trial races contested, will return to the Alberta raceway on Saturday, October 21st to vie for the winners' share of a $60,646 purse going 400 yards.

True Copy was the first of two trial winners and qualifiers for owner Charles Stojan and trainer William Leech. Both were ridden by jockey Ricardo Moreno.

In the final trial, True Copy completed the 400 yards in a quick :19:923 clocking to earn a 106-speed index and set the fastest time. The daughter of Tr Dasher drew away easily to secure her fourth win in five career starts.

True Copy's only loss was second-place effort to Bringonthewave in the $23,302 Jerry Stojan Memorial Futurity in August. Bred in California by Edward Allred, from the Separatist mare Realistically, True Copy has banked $11,424 this season.

The owner-trainer-jockey trio's other qualifier, Stripsteak, posted the most impressive trial win in Race 1 with a 3-¼ length effort to get the third fastest time of :19.999 seconds, a 104-speed index.

Stojan purchased the son One Sweet Jess from breeder Steve D. Burns, DVM. The California-bred colt started twice at Los Alamitos before breaking his maiden in a trial for the John Deere Evergreen Park Juvenile Challenge in August. He finished last in the Juvenile Challenge final with a very troubled trip.

Out of the Separatist mare Ruth Chris, the Leech trainee has banked $8,558 this season.

The aforementioned multiple stakes winner Bringonthewave kept his perfect 5-for-5 record in tact with a dominating 1-¼ length winning effort in the second trial under jockey Ramiro Castillo.

The son of world champion Wave Carver posted the second fastest time of :19.955 seconds, a 105-speed index. Trainer James Doolin conditions the Alberta-bred 2-year-old for owner Dale Zukowski.

Shady Lane Stables bred the two-time futurity winning earner of $38,122 from the Corona Cartel mare Special Corona. The gray gelding won the Alberta Bred Futurity and the Jerry Stojan Memorial Futurity this season.
