First Prize Sass Earns First Stakes Win in Grande Prairie Sprint Stakes

GRANDE PRAIRIE, AB—JULY 16, 2017—It only took :7.014 seconds for First Prize Sass to score her first stakes win in the $6,750 Grande Prairie Sprint Stakes (not black type) on Sunday afternoon. The 4-year-old filly and jockey Scott Sterr broke on top and finished a neck in front of the competition in the 110-yard dash, earning a 96 speed index.

First Prize Sass ($9.30) is bred, owned and trained by Wesley Oulton. Oulton bred the filly in Alberta by First Timber, out of Sass N Dass by El Rey Burner. Before her win in the Sprint, she had placed in several restricted graded stakes races and finished second in the Canada Quarter Horse Cup Derby last fall. The victory was her third lifetime win and pushed her career earnings to $36,561.

Anitalamasbonita finished a short neck behind First Prize Sass and managed to clear the rest of the field by a length in the short event. J. B. Botello and Anitalamasbonita posted a time of 7.061 and a 92 speed index for trainer Allen Goodsell and owners Corey and Mike Davis.

Anitalamasbonita is a 3-year-old filly by Ivory James, bred in Oklahoma by Greg Cullum, out of the Fishers Dash mare Sixes Fisher. Still a maiden, she has now finished second in four of her nine career starts.

In third place was Fiftys Carbon Copy and jockey Freddy Fuentes for trainer Donalda Cochrane. Fiftys Carbon Copy is a homebred for 1419677 Alberta Ltd, bred in Alberta. The 4-year-old colt is by Promised Class, out of Streakin Cc, by Streakin La Jolla.

Post-time favorite Cruisinfourabruisin, who qualified for last year’s $350,000 Grade 1 Bank of America Challenge Championship at Los Alamitos, broke slowly and finished fourth. First Prize Sass’s barnmate Ima Runnin First was fifth.
