AURORA, CO—JULY 15, 2017—Coming off a third-place effort, to the fastest qualifier, in the June 30th trials, Iza Captain, under jockey Jose Ruiz, took a big bounce Saturday at Arapahoe Park to win the $59,580 Lucille Rowe Derby by one-length over Late N Dirty. Shes My F-oose finished a nose back in third.
"He didn’t break that fast, but in like 50 yards I started moving him," Ruiz said. "He was coming fast and finished strong and did everything perfectly."
Saddled by Julio Corral, Iza Captain completed the 350 yards in :17.840 seconds, into a 2-mph headwind, to pick up the $23,832 winners' purse.
Racing for owners Pedro and Lilia Andazola, the son of Captain Courage has compiled an (11) 2-3-1 record and banked $37,952. Richard and Genevieve Herrman bred the sorrel gelding from the Mr Eye Opener mare Iza Flyin Eye.
Owner/breeder George Seward's Late N Dirty earned $11,916 for her second-place effort. John Hammes saddled the One Sweet Jess filly with Alfredo Triana, Jr. getting the riding call. Late N Dirty is out of Dashing Diva by Victory Dash.
Rarest Ivory, Girl With Guns, Perkin Desire, Run With Courage, Go Streak Lightning and Too Long Kissin completed the field.
