Vodka At Midnight Prevails In Bob Morehouse Memorial Stakes

SHAKOPEE, MN—JUNE 25, 2017—Despite ducking in at the break, multiple stakes winner Vodka At Midnight got his head in front of Blacks Cartel to win the $29,200 Bob Morehouse Memorial Stakes Sunday afternoon at Canterbury Park. Rey D Arranque finished three-quarters back in third.

Facing older horses for the first time, under jockey Brayan Velazquez, Vodka In Midnight completed the 400 yards in :20.305 seconds into a 7-mph headwind to earn a 91-speed index. It was the fourth win and second career stakes victory in seven starts for the son of second crop sire Triple Vodka.

Jason Olmstead conditions the Minnesota homebred for owner Summer Run, Inc. Out of the Oak Tree Special mare Moonlight Masquerade, Vodka At Midnight picked up $14,600 to boost his career earnings total to $63,324.

"She ran like I thought she would if she gave herself a chance," Olmstead said. In her last race on May 27, Vodka At Moonlight sat down in the gate and subsequently ran last as the betting favorite. For the Morehouse Stakes, Olmstead removed the blinkers from Vodka At Moonlight.

"We thought maybe it would help her relax if she could see everything in the gate," Olmstead said.

Last summer the talented filly won the Minnesota Futurity and was second the Minnesota Stallion Breeders' Futurity, both at Canterbury Park.

Casey Black saddled runner-up Blacks Cartel for owner Tracy Black. David Pinon was aboard the Streakin Six Cartel 4-year-old from the Oh My Gee Whiz mare Brandi Whiz. Bred by Don and Eileen Black, the bay filly earned $5,840 to boost her career mark to $66,149.

Rey D Arranque is a 5-year-old son of Afterallitsme from the Jazzing Hi mare Jazzing Jackie. Randall Weidner conditions for owner Eric Castro. Justin Klaiber rode the gelding bred by Kenneth Quade. He earned $4,380 for the effort.

Vodka At Moonlight paid $8.40 to win. She is trained by Jason Olmstead and was ridden by Brayan Velazquez. Final time for the 400 yards was 20.305 seconds.

Gramma Ella, Jess A Chance, Mountain Rake and I Am The Doctor completed the field.
