Trippys Royal Jess With Big Finish To Win Indigo Illusion Handicap

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—JUNE 24, 2017—Cesar De Alba, currently the leading Quarter Horse jockey at Los Alamitos, enjoyed a great night on Saturday, as he piloted three winners including the $15,000 Indigo Illusion aboard Trippys Royal Jess at 350 yards.

De Alba, who also picked up his first Quarter Horse season title here last year, guided Trippys Royal Jess to a ¾ length win over California Breeders Freshman Stakes Fillies winner Scholarly in the Indigo Illusion.

Trained by Chris O’Dell for owner and breeder Abigail Kawananakoa, Trippys Royal Jess was second at the start before pulling away to convincing win. Sent off at 3-1, the Apollitical Jess filly picked up her fifth win in 12 career starts. She also earned $8,250 for the win to take her lifetime earnings to $35,400.

"I’ve always liked this filly," said De Alba, who also guided the sprinters A Livin Dynasty and Favorite Kay to the winner’s circle on Saturday. "She ran a big second in the (La Pacifica Handicap). She didn’t break very sharps, but tonight she broke very sharp and ran up the track. When she broke that good I knew I was in good shape. When she broke I knew it was game over."

Trained by Roberto Dominguez for Kolleen Ledgerwood, the Tr Dasher filly Scholarly has now finished first or second in eighth of 11 career starts. She also earned $3,375 for her runner-up effort. Eduardo Nicasio piloted the Ed Allred-bred runner.

Jim Walker’s One Sweet Jess filly, Doing Trix, a half-sister to Champion of Champions winner Zoomin For Spuds, ran third.

Sweet Aguila was fourth while the favorite Rayshas Pink Sky was fifth. Kawananakoa’s Staggering Stride was bumped leaving the gate and ran sixth.
