Apollitical Scout Sends Eye N Capo To First Career Defeat, Winning The Remington Park Derby

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—APRIL 22, 2017—Apollitical Scout entered the paddock as if she owned it, then shortly thereafter stepped into the winner’s circle after her upset win in the $305,400 Remington Park Derby(RG3). The race is a restricted Grade 3 event for eligible Oklahoma-bred 3-year-olds.

The victory for Apollitical Scout spelled the first career loss for Eye N Capo who came into the race undefeated through five previous starts. Eye N Capo was the beaten wagering favorite at 4-5 odds, finishing a neck behind Apollitical Scout, settling for second place.

The striking daughter of Apollitical Jess, out of the Corona Cartel mare Swingin Cartel, won her trial to the derby as a favorite, but was sent off at 9-1 in the final. In 2017, Apollitical Scout has laid down the gauntlet in winning her first two starts of the year.

"She left perfect," said winning jockey Omar Reyes. "She broke in front, by far. I just kept riding her and stayed after her to make sure they wouldn’t catch me."

Owned by Karen and Preston Cloud of Sallisaw, Okla., Apollitical Scout is proving to be a great purchase. "We bought her as a yearling out of the Heritage Place sale (2015), for $19,000. We got a bargain. Her next start should be the trials to the Heritage Place Derby," said Preston Cloud.

Earning $122,160, Apollitical Scout pushed her lifetime earnings to $197,660. Winning her third career race from nine lifetime attempts, Apollitical Scout has laid down the gauntlet in winning her first two starts of the year. She covered the 400 yards in 19.674 seconds over a fast track for trainer Clint Crawford. Apollitical Scout was bred in Oklahoma by Dan & Louise Jones.

Eye N Capo suffered his first loss in six starts. Erika Huitron conditions the graded stakes winning son of Capo de Capi for owner Ruben Garcia Montemayor. Dee and Betty Raper bred the sorrel gelding from the Mr Eye Opener mare Satisfeyen. The $51,918 runner-up check boosted Eye N Capo's total to $371,570.

Stakes winner As And Js picked up $33,594 for her third place effort. Manuel Mata trains the Apolltical Jess filly out of Oklahoma Futurity(G3) winner Adolph Tres Knockout by Tres Seis. Gerardo Garrido rode the bay filly for owner Leonardo Alcala. Five Puig Racing LLC is the breeder. She has earned nearly $248,000.

Apollitical Scout paid $21.80 to win, $6.20 to place and $5.00 to show. Eye N Capo paid $3 to place and $2.40 to show. As And Js ran third and paid $7 to show. Lethal Class, V Power, Dicecapades, Knockemout Capi, Eye Eye Captain, Political Bliss and Cartel Envy completed the field.

This is the first Remington Park Derby win for the Clouds and for jockey Reyes. Crawford won the race for the second time as he previously saddled This Candys Awesome to victory in 2014.
