Vodka At Moonlight, Erya Hayes Win Minnesota Quarter Horse Futurity and Derby

SHAKOPEE, MN—AUGUST 21, 2016—Canterbury Park hosted two quarter horse stakes on their 11-race Minnesota Festival of Champions program Sunday at Canterbury Park.

Vodka At Moonlight Defeats Stablemate in Minnesota Quarter Horse Futurity

Under jockey Nic Goodwin Vodka At Moonlight got away well and outlasted stablemate Pyc Jess Bit Mydust to win the $49,300 Minnesota Quarter Horse Futurity by a head Sunday afternoon at Canterbury Park. Jess A Chance finished 1¼ lengths back in the show position.

Conditioned by Jason Olmstead, Vodka At Moonlight completed the 350 yards in :18.008 seconds into a 12 mph headwind to pocket the winner's purse of $24,650.

“I told Nik this horse could win if the other horse did not run his best,” Olmstead said.

A homebred racing for Summer Run, Inc., Vodka At Moonlight entered the race off a second place effort in the $50,000 Minnesota Stallion Breeders' Futurity last month. A daughter of first crop sire Triple Vodka, the black filly is out of the Oak Tree Special mare Moonlight Masquerade. She has compiled a (4) 3-1-0 record and earned $48,060 this season.

Winner of the $165,600 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity in his last start, Pyc Jess Bit Mydust earned $9,860 to bring her lifetime mark to just over $100,000. Also trained by Omstead, the Apollitical Jess gelding is a homebred racing for owner/breeder Lunderborg, LLC. Brayan Velazquez was aboard the gelding from the Pyc Paint Your Wagon mare Paint Or More.

Jess A Chance races for owner/breeder Ralph Haglund and trainer Randy Weidner. Trevino Clark had the riding assignment aboard the Jess Jones gelding out of Unlika Angel, by First Down Devil. The multiple stakes-placed gelding earned $7,395 to bring his total to $17,560.

The winner returned $8.00 for a $2 win wager.

Wallykazam, Bbs Pyc Luckycharm, Givinitalittleeffort and Included To Dash completed the field. Its Crunch Tyme was scratched.

Eyra Hayes Steps Up In Minnesota Quarter Horse Derby

Ridden by jockey Chase Clark, Eyra Hayes , at odds of 29 to 1, stepped up to defeat Sr Ur Fired by a neck in the $50,300 Minnesota Quarter Horse Derby on Sunday at Canterbury Park. Gramma Ella finished a head back in the blanket finish for third.

A homebred for owner/breeder Terry Reed, Eyra Hayes completed the 400 yards in :20.382 seconds into a 16 mph crosswind. Jerry Livingston saddled the Knud With Wings gelding to his second win in seven starts.

He returned $60.40 to win.

“He’s always been pretty good,” Livingtson said. “He got away well. The only question was the distance.”

Two races back Eyra Hayes started for a $16,000 tag at Canterbury Park. Out of the Splash Bac mare Silver Fastbac, the sorrel gelding picked up $25,150 for the win, nearly doubling his earnings total to $47,658.

Summer Run Inc.'s Sr Ur Fired picked up $10,060 for his second place effort. Jason Olmstead trains the Teller Cartel gelding out of Zoomshakalaka by Azoom. Bryan Velazquez was in the saddled. Stone Chase Stables LLC bred the multiple stakes-placed earner of $38,760.

Terry Reed and Jerry Livingston also teamed with third place finisher Gramma Ella. Another homebred for Reed, the Knud With Wings filly is out of the Bully Bullion mare Whereshesupposedtobe. She earned $7,545 for the effort.

Completing the official order of finish were Avoid The Drama, Blacks Cartel, Squirt Guns, V Os Filo, I Am The Doctor, Dashing Good Reason and Moon Me Chick.
