Starz Power Gets Up In El Moro De Cumpas Futurity, Jess Call Me Fancy Wins Derby

DOUGLAS, AZ—MAY 24, 2016—Stanley Munro's homebred Starz Power got up at the wire to defeat The Price Corona by a nose in the $40,000 El Moro De Cumpas Futurity on Sunday (May 22) at the Cochise County Fairground in Douglas. Fastest qualifier A Chick In A Daze finished half-a-length back in third place.

Ridden by jockey Jarell James, the 2-year-old son of Heza Motor Scooter completed the 300 yards in :15.640 seconds, a 97 speed index into a 24 mph crosswind. The $24,000 winner's purse swelled his bankroll with $25,120 with a 2-for-2 perfect record this season.

Umberto Belloc conditioned the sorrel gelding for Munro. Starz Power was bred in New Mexico from the Corona Cartel mare Ima Gold Cartel.

Trainer Thomas D. Moreno saddled The Prince Corona to his second place effort for owner/breeder Rey Moreno. Rodolfo Arvizu rode the Royal Quick Dash colt out of Tellherwerehopeful, by Teller Cartel. He earned $8,000 for the effort.

Also owned by Rey Moreno was third place finisher A Chick In A Daze. Martin Osuna had the riding assignment aboard the Mexico-bred son of Dog Daze Afternoon for trainer Thomas Moreno. Out of the Willie Wanta Dash mare A Willing Chic, A Chick In A Daze earned $4,000 for his effort. Ramiro Romo-Martinez is the breeder.

Cowboys Dynasty, K Kardashian, Zoomin Dasher and Go Seis completed the field. Jess Miss B was scratched.

Jess Call Me Fancy Wins El Moro De Cumpus Derby

Jess Call Me Fancy got her third win of the year on Saturday when she defeated Bentin in the $30,000 El Moro De Cumpas Derby at the Cochise County Fairgrounds in Douglas. Sweet Se Puede finished a neck behind to get third.

Ridden by jockey Luis Yescas, Jess Call Me Fancy completed the 350-yard course in :17.980 seconds, a 98-speed index. The $16,500 winner's purse boosted the daughter of Jess Give It Em earnings total to $29,388. She has compiled a (12) 5-1-0 record.

Bred-owned and trained by Raymond Felix, Jess Call Me Fancy is out of the Royal Quick Dash mare Monique Quick Cash. Jess Call Me Fancy is an Arizona-bred.

Saddled to Tomas Moreno, Betini put in a late bit to finish second, picking up $6,000 for the effort. Martin Osuna had the riding call for owner Joel Merino. Havid Canez bred Betini in Louisiana from the Tres Seis mare Jacque Seis.

Jockey Jarrell James had the riding call aboard Sweet Se Puede for owner Jorge Nunez and trainer Armando Castellanos. Lake Mathews Mare Farm, Inc. bred the One Sweet Jess gelding in California from the Moo Vin First mare Move Me First. He earned $3,000 for the effort.

Shoulda Kissed Me, Azucar Cayeene, Black Flag Warring, Bugatti Veyron and Im Flyin completed the field.
