Lethbridge Runs Two Divisions of Horsemen's Open Derby on Saturday
Last year's Canada Quarter Horse Cup Futurity winner made her season debut a winning effort in Division 1 of the Horsemen's Open Derby at Lethbridge.

LETHBRIDGE, ALB—MAY 21, 2016—Rocky Mountain Turf Club at Lethbridge in Alberta conducted two divisions of the Horsemen's Open Derby (not black type) on Saturday's race card.

Toughie Wins Horsemen's Open Derby – Division 1

Graded stakes winner Toughie was an impressive 1¼-length winner over Living Is Sweet in the $8,711(US) Horsemen's Open Derby – Division 1 (not black type) on Saturday afternoon. Hrh Tres Royal finished two lengths back for third.

Ridden by jockey Ricardo Moreno, Toughie to a quick lead after the start then cruised over a sloppy racetrack in :17.899 seconds, a 97 speed index with a 19 mph tailwind. The $6,055(US) winner's purse boosted Toughie's earnings mark to $88,706. Trainer William Leech saddled the Stel Corona filly to her fifth win for owner Charles Stojan.

Winner of last year's Grade 3 Canada Quarter Horse Cup Futurity, Toughie was also a finalist in the Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity, the only loss she has suffered in six career starts. Edward C. Allred bred the chestnut filly in California from the Hawkish mare Hard Lining.

Trainer Buckey Stockwell conditions Living Is Sweet, a graded stakes-placed son of second crop sire One Sweet Jess for The Albertans. Jose and Gustavo De La Torre bred the brown colt in California from the Salt Lake (TB) mare Excessive Living (TB). Ridden by jockey Jose Rocha, Living Is Sweet earned $2,265(US).

Stockwell also saddled third place finisher Hrh Tres Royale for himself and Beverly Stockwell. Martin Ortiz rode the California-bred Tres Seis colt, out of the First Down Dash mare Trippys Royal Dash, to pickup $1,045(US). Abigail Kawananakoa is the breeder.

Angells Baby Tnt and Two If By Sea completed the field. Better Knickers, Er Café and Kiddys Down were all scratched.

Quad Seis Wins Horsemen's Open Derby – Division 2

Quad Seis defeated Fly Bye Cruise by a neck in the $6,807(US) second-division of the Horsemen's Open Derby(not black type). Send Gold was another neck behind the leaders for third in the blanket finish.

Quad Seis had a big finish under jockey Freddy Fuenes to completed the 350 yards over a fast racetrack in :18.334 seconds with an 19 mph tailwind. The $3,607(US) winner's purse boosted the lightly raced Tres Seis filly's earnings total to $5,980.

Trainer Laurie Ferguson conditions the sorrel for owner Ralph Danard and Carrie Suitor. Bred in Oklahoma by C. Edward Taylor, from the Corona For Me mare Corona On A Jet, Quad Sies has compiled a (4) 2-1-0 race record.

Tom Kenway owns, trains and bred Fly Bye Cruise, a son of Special Fly Bye from the Eye Take Time mare Eye Cruise. Ridden by Martin Ortiz, the sorrel gelding picked up $1,770(US) for the effort.

Send Gold is an Alberta homebred racing for owner/breeder Delton Gehring and trainer George Scott. Jose Rochs rode the palomino daughter of Cuivre River from the Lil Easy Cash mare Fantastic Race Babe.

Separate Jess, Experimental Rocket, Stel Flying, My Mr Millionaire and Chaos On Tappanzee completed the field.
