Dashin Jj Upsets Heavy Favorite Painted Turnpike In Mister Lewie Memorial Stakes

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—MAY 20, 2016—Dashin JJ, a 15-1 longshot, pulled the upset in Friday’s Grade 1, $32,500 Mister Lewie Memorial Stakes at Remington Park, defeating the heavily favored Painted Turnpike by a half-length.

Owned and trained by Ray Enlow of Sapulpa, Okla., Dashin JJ grabbed the lead at the start of the 400-yard event then dug in to hold off Painted Turnpike, the heavy 1-9 betting favorite. William Thomason guided Dashin JJ who brought his “A-Game” for the Mister Lewie, an event for Paint and Appaloosa horses, three and older.

“That horse (Dashin JJ) was rolling today,” Thomason noted. “He (Painted Turnpike) couldn’t have caught him.”

Dashin JJ turned the tables on Painted Turnpike after running second to him in the Paul Harber Memorial in April. In the Mister Lewie Memorial, Dashin JJ was not to be denied, crossing the finish in :19.633 seconds over a fast track. Painted Turnpike, losing for the first time in his eight starts at Remington Park, finished 1-1/2 lengths better than third-place Major Mac.

Dashin JJ paid $33.80 to win, $5.80 to place and $6.60 to show. Painted Turnpike, beaten for only the second time in his 12 career starts, paid $2.20 to place and $2.10 to show. Major Mac returned $6.40 to show.

A 4-year-old Paint gelding by Little Jungle Jet from the Dashin Is Easy (QH) mare Dashin Di (QH), Dashin JJ was bred in Oklahoma by David Stone. The win in the Mister Lewie was the sixth from 14 attempts for Dashin JJ and his second in eight tries at Remington Park. He picked up $19,392 to run his career earnings to $96,671.

The Mister Lewie Memorial is named in honor of the late trainer Lewis Warthcow of Fitzhugh, Okla. Wartchow, an Oklahoma Horse Racing Hall of Fame Member, was known as the “King of Paints” for his dominance with Paint horses throughout his career. Equally successful with Appaloosas, Wartchow passed away in 2003.
