SUNLAND PARK, NM—APRIL 17, 2016—Boxwineizfine raced to her third straight victory in route to setting the fastest qualifying time for the Grade 3 $160,875 West Texas Derby Sunday afternoon at Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino.
The 10 fastest qualifiers, from six trial races contested on Sunday, will return to Sunland Park on Sunday, May 2 to vie for a winners purse worth $75,611, while going 400 yards.
Ridden by jockey Sergio Becerra, Jr., Boxwineizfine broke well and quickly extended her lead to 3¼ lengths in the fifth trial. The lightly raced daughter of Separatist completed the 400-yard task in :19.258 seconds into a 7 mph crosswind to earn a 93-speed index and fastest qualifying time. Trainer Ramon Rivera saddled Boxwineizfine to her third straight win, from six starts, for owner Luis Hernandez.
Bred in California by Vessels Stallion Farm, LLC, the sorrel filly is out of the graded stakes winning daughter of Heza Fast Dash, Onemoreglassofwine. She was a $13,000 Ruidoso Select Yearling graduate in 2014. Boxwineizfine entered the trials off an Allowance victory at Sunland on March 25. Prior to that she broke her maiden at Zia Park last December.
Rivera also saddled 9th qualifier California King, a colt by leading sire First Down Dash, who won the first trial by one-length under jockey Jesse Levario.
Stakes-placed Rocky El Roble won the fourth trial by 1¼ lengths to get the second fastest clocking of :19.309, a 92-speed index. Jockey Jose Enriquez had the riding call for trainer Miguel Castillo. Astorga Racing, LLC owns the Jesses James Jr colt out of the Chimes Band(TB) mare Lady Chimes. The four-time winner, bred in New Mexico by Hubaldo Solis, has earned nearly $75,000.
Castillo also saddled 5th qualifier Good Job Honey, a Freighttrain B filly, and 6th qualifier Undaunted, a son of leading living sire of money earners Corona Cartel.
Jason Giles sent out Bf Fooserageous to her second straight Sunland Park win in the final trial to get the third fastest clocking of :19.310 seconds, also a 92 speed index. Adrian Ramos rode the homebred daughter of champion Foose for owner/breeder Birrell Farms, LLC. The two-time futurity winning filly is out of the Proudest Effort mare Bf Outrageous.
