LOS ALAMITOS, CA— OCTOBER 2, 2015—Jere Brinkerhoff had the memory of his father, Dan Valgene Brinkerhoff, on his mind on Fridayat Los Alamitos.
“We buried him a year ago today. He was 86,” Brinkerhoff said. “My dad loved horses. He trained them for many years. He never came to Los Alamitos, but he had horses in the Northern California fair circuit and also trained horses in Phoenix.”
Dan Brinkerhoff “took horses all over the Western United States to race” according to the obituary published in Salt Lake Tribune on Oct. 2, 2014. “Dan will be best known for his skills as a horse trainer. If there was a race anywhere around there was a Brinkerhoff horse there. Dan's love for horses was unmeasured. He was leading trainer 2 years in a row at Billings, Montana.”
It’s a skill that Brinkerhoff inherited from his father. The trainer saddled Joe Legacy to victory in the John Ward Handicap last year and now he has won the $16,000 Kip Didericksen Handicap with Gallant Mystic on Friday at Los Alamitos.
“This win is in memory of my dad,” Brinkerhoff said. “We bought this horse in April. He had a chip taken out of one of his knees. We started training him for this race and things worked out nicely with this race. I would like to stay here at Los Alamitos, but right now most of the horses that I have are horses that I own.”
Brinkerhoff owns Gallant Mystic in partnership with Jesus Canales. The gelding by Separatist is out of The Creole Queen and was bred by Julianna Hawn Holt. Gallant Mystic earned $8,800 for the win to take his career earnings to $76,478. He’s won seven of 32 career starts. Cesar De Alba piloted the 7-year-old in the 350-yard dash.
Gallant Mystic covered the distance in :17.931.
Layne Sprouse’s CR Proud Prince, which was trained by Tanya Kay Schvaneveldt ran second. Cruz Mendez rode the Winners Version gelding from the Proudest Effort mare Proud Caption. Chad Richard is the breeder.
Jeremy and Brian Price’s JP Future Secret ran third. Bret Vickery conditions the Furrtreeous gelding from the Raise A Secret mare Cocas Secret. John Price is the breeder and Tony Guymon had the riding call.
