ROCK SPRINGS, WY—SEPTEMBER 4, 2015—Hes A Corona Bay raced to the top qualifying mark from three trials on Friday for the I-80 Futurity at Sweetwater Downs.
The 10 fastest qualifiers will return to the Wyoming racetrack on Saturday, September 19 to vie for the winner's share of a $10,000-added purse going 300 yards.
Ridden by jockey Tyson Lusk, Hes A Corona Bay completed the 300-yard task in :15.679 seconds. Aided by 9 mph tailwind he defeated Golden Special Pie by half-a-length and set the top qualifying mark. Chancey Spencer saddled the homebred to his fourth win in eight starts this season.
The I-80 Futurity final is third stakes this season the A and C Racing and Roping owned gelding has qualified to this year. Chad Richard bred the earner of $8,249 in Utah from the Corona For Me mare Flaming Corona.
Spencer also saddled Brooks Big Boy to the 7th fastest time for A and C Racing and Roping.
Sakes-placed Jess My Apollo broke her maiden in the second trial under jockey Clyde Smith to set the second fastest time of :15.688 seconds. The daughter of Jess My Moon was the first of two finalists saddled by trainer Mike D. Taylor.
Ralph Young owns the Montana-bred out of the Apollo (TB) mare Jungle Song. Leonard and Rada Rogers is the breeder. The filly's record stands at (5) 1-2-2 with $4,676 in earnings.
Trainers Jorge Nava and Diana Garfias each saddled three finalist from Friday's trial races.
