ELKO, NV—AUGUST 30, 2015—Bar Larose's Jesse James Jr filly Koltiska won the first of two trials Sunday for the Elko County Quarter Horse Derby at the Elko County Fairgrounds. Ridden by jockey Uriel Dominguez Koltiska completed the 400 yards in :19.910 seconds to set the top qualifying mark.
The 10 qualifiers from the two trial races on Sunday will return to the Elko County Fairgrounds on Monday, September 7th and vie for the winner's share of a $7,500-added purse going 400 yards.
The Farrell Christofferssen trainee earned a 103-speed index for her effort. Larose bred Koltiska in Utah from the Panther Mountain mare Mountains Alibi. She is a winner of two of eight career starts.
Multiple stakes winner Five Bar Sassy won the second trial by half-a-length to get the second fastest clocking of :19.951 seconds, a 102-speed index.
Jockey Jesus Canales rode the Hard Hitting filly for trainer Riley Moosman. A homebred for Five Barkers, Inc., the black miss is out of the Stoli mare Five Bar Fly. She has won eight of 14 career starts and entered the trials off a win in the $26,500 Wyoming Downs Derby on August 8. She has earned $46,489.
