ROCK SPRINGS, WY—AUGUST 30, 2015—Winners Corona defeated Jet Black Patriarch by three-quarters Saturday afternoon in the $7,000 Governor's Stakes (not black-type*) at Sweetwater Downs. Cabo Corona finished half-a-length back in third.
Under jockey Oscar Cervantes Winners Corona flew from the gate to complete the 300 yards in :15.296 seconds, a 101-speed index. It was the third win 16 career starts for the A and C Racing and Roping homebred by Winners Version.
Chancy Spencer conditions the 4-year-old out of Flaming Corona, by Corona For Me. He used the $3,500 winner's purse to boost his earning mark to nearly $36,000.
Also a 4-year-old, Jet Black Patriarch was looking for this third straight win in as many starts this season but had to settle for second place money of $1,750. Travis Offret saddled the homebred son of Jet Black Patriot for owner/breeder Magdalene Cummings. Justin Vanderwoude was aboard.
Jeramie Fennell rode Cabo Corona for owners Rona and Dolores Coover and trainer Lynn Simpson. The 5-year-old Corona For Me mare is out of My Lady Amber, by First Down Dash. Bred in Texas by Marcus Smith the stakes-placed mare has earned $23,812.
Just On Fire, Buckey On A High and About To Fire completed the short field.
* To meet AQHA stakes rules a race must have a minimum purse of $15,000 to be considered for black-type status.
