Seize The Win, Beach Cartel advance as trial winners at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino

SHELBYVILLE, IN—AUGUST 29, 2015—Seize the Win and Beach Cartel each won their QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Derby trials at Indiana Grand Saturday (Aug. 29). The pair of winners were the top two qualifiers for the Derby Final, which is set for Saturday, Sept. 12.

In the first trial, Seize The Win and Shanley Jackson put together a near gate to wire performance to earn the top spot heading into the Derby Final. The duo crossed under the wire in a time of :20.032 seconds, one-half length ahead of This Wagon Is Mine and Berkley Packer, who was just a nose in front of third place finisher Stinkin Rich and Rodney Prescott on the far outside.

Seize The Win was the favorite in the race, paying $5.60, $3.60, $2.60 across the board. The three-year-old son of PYC Paint Your Wagon has been a standout for Owner Glenn Graff and Trainer Matt Frazier since beginning his career. He was a winner in the $128,000 Governor’s Stake at Indiana Grand last fall before venturing to Hialeah over the winter, scoring the win in the $418,000 Hialeah Derby. Jackson, 2014 Leading Quarter Horse Jockey at Indiana Grand, has ridden Seize The Win in all but one of his 11 career starts. The Texas bred now has five wins in 11 starts with earnings in excess of $290,000.

The second trial placed another stakes winner, Beach Cartel, in the winner’s circle with a similar trip that led the field of 10 nearly gate to wire. Newcomer Berkley Packer guided the grey son of Escondido Beach under the wire in a time of :20.095 seconds to grab the second quickest spot on the final board. IZ Special James and Shanley Jackson finished second over Ms Fool Me Once and Cesar Esqueda for third.

Beach Cartel is owned and bred by Sheri Miller. Randy Smith, 2014 Leading Quarter Horse Trainer and current leader in the standings once again for 2015, is the trainer of Beach Cartel, who is now four for six lifetime.

Smith has four horses qualified for the SSA Derby Final while Frazier will saddle three horses for the final.

Live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing will continue through Saturday, Oct. 31. Racing is held Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 2:05 p.m. with Saturday evening post time set at 6:05 p.m. Two more all-Quarter Horse racing days will be held in 2015 set for Saturday, Oct. 10 and Saturday, Oct. 24.
