Tres Magicals Surprises In Cash For Kas Handicap

LOS ALAMITOS, CA— AUGUST 28, 2015—The Quarter Company LLC’s Tres Magicals made a big statement in the $15,000 Cash For Kas Handicap after winning over a field that included the red hot mare Solid Connection and AQHA champion aged mare Significant Heart on Friday at Los Alamitos.

Tres Magical flew out of the gate from post number one and then held off the late run from Solid Connection to win the 350-yard race by a nose. Oscar Peinado piloted the Tres Seis 4-year-old mare for trainer Jaime Gomez. It was Tres Magical’s fourth career win in 18 starts and second in five starts this season.

“She broke like a rocket,” Peinado said. “We were on the lead the whole way, but the outside horse really came at us hard at the end. For a second I wasn’t sure if we had won it and then I thought that maybe it was going to be a dead-heat. The quick start was big in getting this win tonight.”

After racing at Prairie Meadows with mixed results, Tres Magicals returned to her home base of Los Alamitos for the start of the Spring season. She was bumped hard in her local debut and settled for fourth place in the Miss Princess Handicap on May 10. Then she became fractious in the gate and never got going when running in an allowance event on May 31. She’s made very few mistakes from there.

Bred by Porfirio Carrasco from the Fishers Dash mare Fishers Proud, Tres Magicals ran second to Solid Connection in the Dana Point Handicap and then returned to post a nice head victory against allowance foes on July 24. She posted another big effort tonight, as she led by as much as a half-length at the midway point to get the win over the fast closing Solid Connection.

Tres Magicals earned $8,250 for the win to take her lifetime earnings to $44,800.

Owned by Paulo Freire, Solid Connection suffered her first loss in three starts this year. The mare by Mr Jess Perry dominated the Dana Point by a half-length in her last start, but she broke third in this race and just missed catching the quick breaking Tres Magicals. Ridden by Carlos Huerta for trainer Paul Jones, Solid Connection earned $3,375 in this race. John Andreni bred the 4-year-old from the Dinastia Toll Brz, by Tolltac.

Abigail Kawananakoa’s champion mare Significant Heart, the winner of the Grade 1 Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap last year, finished third. This was her second outing of the year. The Corona Cartel mare's first was a third in the Charger Bar Handicap on January 4. La Feliz Montana Ranch, LLC bred Significant Heart in California from the Mr Jess Perry mare Jess Significant.

Shake Djibouti, Bring Me Home, Zigfield Follies, and Ima Foose completed the field.

Jockey Tony Guymon and trainer Mike Casselman enjoyed big nights at Los Alamitos on Friday. Guymon rode the winners of races four, five, and six, while Casselman saddled the winers of the fifth, sixth and seventh race. Pairing up with Casselman, Guymon rode Casselman’s Mindys Favorite in the fifth and Dr. Steve Burns’ Working Girl Blues in the sixth. He had previously ridden TLM Streakin Joy to victory for trainer John Cooper in the fourth. Casselman completed his triple with the help of jockey Oscar Peinado. They joined forces to win the seventh race with Dr. Burns’ Seperate Flight.
