SHAKOPEE, MN—JULY 26, 2015—Effortless Strut rolled to the top qualifying mark and trainer Jason Olmstead saddled half the field of qualifiers for the NCQHRA Futurity Sunday afternoon at Canterbury Park.
The 10 fastest two-year-olds, from the four trial races contested on Sunday's race card, will return to Canterbury Park on Sunday, August 9 to vie for the winner's share of a $40,000-est. purse going 350 yards.
Effortlessly Strut, an Oak Tree Special filly owned by Jerry Oxner and trained by Randy Weidner, dueled early then drew away by three-quarters of a length to win the second of four trials. She set the top qualifying mark of :17.953 seconds, a 93 speed index with a 5 mph tailwind.
Cartel Dakota was the first of five finalists saddled by trainer Jason Olmstead. The filly by first crop sire Favorite Cartel broke her maiden in the first trial while clocking the second fastest time of :17.990 with a 5 mph tailwind. Jorge Torres rode the North Dakota homebred for owner/breeder Randal Schwartz. She is out of the Major Rime mare Nd Bunny Jet.
Coming off a win in the $141,000 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity on July 5, Eagles Span stumbled at the start of the first trial but recovered under jockey Cody Smith to finish third and post the sixth fastest time time. Olmstead trains the One Famous Eagle colt, out of Tiny First Effort by First Down Dash, for Tom and Bill Maher. He has won three of five starts and earned nearly $90,000 this season.
