Ajs High Extends Win Streak to Five With Remington Park Derby Victory

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—APRIL 18, 2015— AJs High extended his win streak to five with a powerful win in the $306,000 Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Derby(RG3). The winner of the 2014 Grade 2, American Quarter Horse Association Juvenile Challenge Championship at Prairie Meadows, now has five wins in seven lifetime starts. His first-place earnings of $122,400 in the derby extend his lifetime earnings to $259,615.

AJs High, a three-year-old gelded son of Apollitical Jess, out of the Rare Form mare Regally Rare, is owned by his breeder, Michael C. Teel of Columbia, Mo.

Jockey Stormy Smith has ridden him in all of his starts and knows him well, “I hit him a couple of times to keep his focus. You don’t want to let his mind wander very long. He gets to pricking his ears down at the end and started looking at the lights. He’s good to ride, once you get him out to the front.” Trained by Charley Hunt, the speedy sorrel covered the 400 yards in 19.724.

AJsHigh paid $6.40 to win, $3.20 to place and $2.60 to show. Paint Me Perry was a length behind in second-place and paid $6.20 to place and $4.60 to show. Candy Cartels Cat finished third and paid $9.60 to show.

The victory in the derby was the first for Teel and Hunt. Smith had won the race once before.

Last season's Oklahoma Futurity(G2) winner Paint Me Perry earned $52,020 for his second place effort. The homebred son of leading sire Pyc Paint Your Wagon races for owner/breeder J & B Rental. Francisco Gonzalez conditions with Paul Nieto riding. Paint Me Perry is out of the Mr Jess Perry mare Baby Perry and has earned $259,301.

Candy Cartels Cat is a homebred for owner/breeder Estate of Carl Pevehouse and is trained by Clinton Crawford. Ivan Carnero rode the stakes-placed Red Storm Cat filly out of Candy Cartel, by Corona Cartel. She earned $33,660 to more than double her earnings to $50,732.

Bp Cartels Policy, Wl Mr Goodtime, Great Grace, Tempting Valor, Ting Ting Tac, Count de Monet and Elegant Okey completed the field.

Sunday afternoon racing begins at 1:30pm and features the $100,000 Remington Park Juvenile for 2-year-old Oklahoma-breds who competed in trials for the Remington Park Futurity.
