Regard With Respect Prevails In Remington Park Futurity

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—APRIL 18, 2015— The richest state-bred futurity in American Quarter Horse racing, the restricted grade 2, $827,000 Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Futurity, went to Regard With Respect on Saturday night. The gray had a solid start and outlasted five others who finished within a length of him to claim the trophy in the event for Oklahoma-bred 2-year-olds.

Owned by Nancy Powell of Kinta, Okla. and trained by Guillermo Valdivia, Regard With Respect was handled by veteran jockey Larry Payne. The gray had displayed a knack for finding an extra kick late during his trial run but didn’t need to play catch up in the futurity as he had the lead well before the finish. Payne didn’t ride him in his qualifying heat on April 4 but felt comfortable with his chances once he had the assignment for the final.

“I pretty much watch all the trials that I don’t ride and I saw the colt scramble away from there and it seemed to cost him quite a bit of ground but he finished really well,” Payne noted. “I told Bill when he told me I would ride him that this horse wasn’t out of it and definitely had a shot at it if we could just get him away on his feet and get him to race early for us, we’ be in good shape.”

Regard With Respect covered the 330 yards in :16.946 seconds over the fast track and won by a neck, holding off Wyld Blue Yonder and Send Me Good Candy finished in a dead-heat for the place. Celtic Emblem was another neck behind the dead-heat pair, finishing fourth.

Overlooked in the wagering at 17-1 odds, Regard With Respect paid $37.60 to win, $12.20 to place and $7.60 to show. Wyld Bleu Yonder paid $4.80 to place and $4.80 to show. Send Me Good Candy paid $3.20 to place and $4.20 to show. BV Midnite Express was the beaten betting favorite at 6-5 odds, finishing sixth, three-quarters of a length behind the winner.

Bred by Nancy Powell, along with her late husband Darrell Powell, Regard With Respect is by Chicks Regard out of the Special Definition broodmare Dynamite Friends. The mare has been extremely productive for Powell.

“We bought this mare at a Heritage Place sale. Every colt we’ve raced from her has been a winner,” Powell said proudly. “This would be her third stakes winner, with another stakes-placed. They are all nice colts, very easy to handle and we’re proud of them.”

The first-place check in the futurity is $330,800, quickly pushing the two-race earnings for Regard With Respect to $339,638.

The Remington Park Futurity win is the first for Powell and the second for trainer Valdivia. Payne rode his fourth winner in the history of the race.

Send Me Good Candy and Wyld Blue Yonder spit $231,560 for the second place dead heat, each earning $115,780.

Send Me Good Candy races for her breeder the Estate of Carl Pevehouse. Clint Crawford trains the daughter of first crop sire Good Reason SA from the Pyc Paint Your Wagon mare Roll On Candy Wagon. Ivan Carnero had the riding call.

A $43,000 Heritage Place September Yearling Sale graduate, Wyld Bleu Yonder races for owner Nicolas Johnson. Michael Taylor conditions the Ivory James filly out of the stakes winning and stakes producing Royal Quick Dash mare Quick Moon Sign. Bobby D. Cox is the breeder.

Completing the futurity field were Celtic Emblem, One Sweet Marie, Bv Midnite Express, A Bee C, Finnick, A Tress Of Paint and Barbie Cartel.

Sunday afternoon racing begins at 1:30pm and features the $100,000 Remington Park Juvenile for 2-year-old Oklahoma-breds who competed in trials for the Remington Park Futurity.
