Daytona B Prevails in Sam Abbey Memorial Invitational Championship

HIALEAH, FL—MARCH 1, 2015—Multiple stakes winner Daytona B used a quick start under jockey Ramon Sanchez to give him enough momentum to hold off a late charge from Jessies First Down in the $100,000 Sam Abbey Memorial Invitational Championship at Hialeah Park Sunday.

Graded stakes winner Daytona B covered the 440 yards in :21.399 seconds to earn a 101 speed index while winning his third stakes. The $60,000 winner's purse brings the son of all-time leading sire First Down Dash's earnings to $261,867.

The same team of owner Gregorio Garcia Garza, trainer Rolando Almanza and jockey Ramon Sanchez had just won the South Florida Quarter Horse Derby at Hialeah Park in the previous race. Bielau Oaks Ranch bred Daytona B in Texas from the multiple stakes winner Dashing Pana, by Toast To Dash.

Coming off a win in the Hialeah Maturity on January 18, Jessies First Down finished second for owner/breeder Ted Abrams and trainer Judd Kearl. Rodrigo Vallejo rode the FDD Dynasty gelding out of Jess A Classy Lassy, by Mr Jess Perry. The $20,000 runner-up purse boosted the bay gelding's earnings to $114,997.

Anna Maria Crowson saddled Crowson Racing's Charvet to a third place finish worth $11,000. Bred in Texas by Bobby D. Cox, the One Famous Eagle gelding was ridden by Alex Baldillez, Jr. He is out of the First Down Dash mare Bloomingdales.

Mesa Marvel, Testing The Ice, Paint Candy Flying, Eye Get The Blue, Dashin Beduino and Arbeka Raincloud completed the field.
